NBCE Contributes $100,000 to Honor George McAndrews

The National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE) has made a $100,000 contribution to the NCMIC Foundation’s George P. and Jerome F. McAndrews Memorial Research Award Fund. Announced by the NCMIC on May 16, 2023, the substantial contribution to the fund comes in the wake of George McAndrews’ passing and the subsequent renaming of the award to honor not just Jerome McAndrews, but both McAndrews brothers.

As detailed in the June 2023 issue of Dynamic Chiropractic, George McAndrews’ legacy to the chiropractic profession includes serving as lead counsel for the successful chiropractic plaintiffs in the landmark 14-year antitrust case Wilk, et al., v AMA, et al., which ultimately found that the AMA participated in an orchestrated effort to “contain and eliminate” the chiropractic profession; as well as supporting chiropractic in several other high-profile cases.

“The NBCE couldn’t be more pleased to make this gift honoring the legacy of George McAndrews,” said Dr. Norman Ouzts, NBCE CEO, in the NCMIC Foundation press release announcing the contribution. “We are practicing chiropractic today because of George’s tenacity and commitment to the profession. I can’t think of a better way to recognize his contribution than to support the future of chiropractic through the NCMIC Foundation.”

Renamed after George’s passing last month, the award fund was established in 2008, with annual awards provided “to a worthy research recipient who has demonstrated exceptional ability to: advance research and the exchange of scientific information; promote high ethical standards in research and/or practice; contribute to practical applications to chiropractic practice; and interact professionally with other individuals and groups involved in relevant research and application.”

“Both George and Jerry spent their careers serving the chiropractic profession,” said Dr. Sportelli, NCMIC Foundation president, in the release. “The grant from the NBCE will help recognize their contributions, providing money for research and student opportunities, as well as enhancing chiropractic colleges. So much good will come from the NBCE’s support and we are grateful for it."
