WFC Non-Interference Policy: What Could It Mean for the ACA?

Editorial Staff  |  DIGITAL EXCLUSIVE

The World Federation of Chiropractic (WFC) Board of Directors adopted a “Policy on Non-Interference and Respect for National Authority” at its Q3 2024 meeting.1 Upon reading this, some might ask if the WFC policy is targeting the activities of the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) in providing international membership to Japanese individuals who do not hold a chiropractic degree from an accredited institution:2

“And whereas WFC Members are expected to uphold these standards, ensuring their conduct does not undermine the standing of another Member national association or the reputation of the chiropractic profession in other nations;

“Therefore be it resolved that the WFC and its constituent Member national associations shall respect the autonomy and independence of each individual Member national association and shall not engage in activities that could in any way be construed as interfering with the affairs of any other Member national association, or the practice of chiropractic within the respective nation, including any relevant legal, regulatory, and healthcare frameworks. Furthermore, no Member national association will advocate for changes in national laws or regulations of another nation unless explicitly invited by the relevant Member national association representing that nation.” (Emphasis added)

ACA is a founding member of the WFC, as is the International Chiropractors Association (ICA,) making the U.S. the only country allowed two WFC member national associations. The ACA has been open about allowing Japanese individuals without a degree from an accredited chiropractic program to become international members.3-4 Given the timing of this policy, the ACA’s actions could possibly bring a formal complaint from other WFC members at the WFC’s 18th Biennial Meeting on May 7-10, 2025.
