Medicare Act Reintroduced in Congress

The Chiropractic Medicare Coverage Modernization Act is under congressional review again, reintroduced in the U.S. House (H.R. 539) and Senate (S. 106) on Jan. 16, 2025. Reps. Gregory Steube (R-Fla.) and John Larson (D-Conn.) introduced the House version, while Sens. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) introduced the Senate version.

Readers will recall from previous years that the act, if signed into law, would “amend title XVIII of the Social Security Act to provide Medicare coverage for all physicians’ services furnished by doctors of chiropractic within the scope of their license, and for other purposes.” Currently, Medicare only reimburses for one chiropractic service: manual manipulation of the spine to correct a vertebral subluxation.

NBCE Scholarship Winners

The National Board of Chiropractic Examiners recently announced winners of its 2024 Annual Student Scholarship Essay Competition, with each winner receiving $2,500 toward their chiropractic education. The four winners are Zelin Zhou (Life University) for “Integrating AI in Chiropractic Practice: Advancements, Challenges, and Future Prospects”; Rebecca Patterson (Parker University) for “The History of Motion Palpation Institute (MPI) and Dr. Leonard Faye’s Discovery of Joint Complex Dysfunction”; Mary Medovich (National University of Health Sciences - Florida) for “The Mitigation of the Opioid Epidemic via Chiropractic Care”; and Mary Kampa (University of Western States) for “The Biopsychosocial Model and the Role of Chiropractors in Holistic Healthcare.”

A Unique Opportunity for Logan Interns

Logan University is partnering with the St. Louis Ambush, an indoor soccer team, providing chiropractic care for the team during the 2024-25 season. Student interns in the university’s Sports and Rehabilitation Clinic rotation provide care during games and practices.

“Partnering with St. Louis Ambush presents an exciting opportunity for our institution to provide evidence-based chiropractic care tailored to the unique needs of professional athletes,” said Dr. Quintin Murray, senior clinician for the Sports and Rehabilitation Clinic. “In turn, our students will gain invaluable hands-on experience, applying their skills in real-world situations and preparing them for successful careers as leaders in chiropractic sports medicine.”

Life University Professor Honored

Dr. Andrew McIntosh, assistant professor in the Life University Health Sciences Department, is the Healthcare Science Technology Education Association’s Educator of the Year.

“Dr. McIntosh’s dedication to innovation in the classroom is nothing short of exemplary,” said Dr. Sharon Foran, assistant dean for health sciences, who nominated Dr. McIntosh for the honor. “His efforts to advance team-based learning reflect a deep commitment to empowering students with dynamic, collaborative educational experiences.”
