Congress Convention Chairperson

The plans for the 1993 convention of the Congress of Chiropractic State Associations (COCSA) are moving at a rapid rate. We anticipate another large turnout for this event. The Congress is an association of nearly 50 state associations. Chiropractic leaders throughout the nation meet to discuss a wide variety of interests common to all associations. This year's meeting is set for November 5-7 in New Orleans.

The convention will focus on national health care and the role that the chiropractic profession will have in the Clinton health care plan. The goal of the meeting is to provide your state association delegates with the information they need to assist their members in positioning themselves in the best possible manner to be active participants in any national health care plan. The information that your state association delegate receives at this meeting will be the most current information from the "front lines." There are many rumors circulating regarding the chiropractic role in national health care. Your state representatives will learn the facts!

Additionally, David Chapman-Smith and Dynamic Chiropractic Editor Don Petersen Jr., will participate and discuss guidelines' development as well as the latest research regarding chiropractic. There will also be round table discussions on items of particular interest to the state associations. The round table topics were generated from an "interest survey" which state association representatives completed.

  • Attorney Mike Schroeder will discuss legal and practical issues surrounding managed care.

  • Dr. Will Evans from Alabama and Julie Young from Oregon will discuss their success in developing managed care networks for their state association membership.

  • Wisconsin Executive Director Russ Leonard will offer an overview of managed care.

One of the primary reasons that chiropractic leaders attend this yearly event is to network with other association representatives. For far too long this profession was positioned in an isolated posture. Each association was attempting to invent and institute policies, procedures and workable solutions to problems. The networking aspect of this meeting has proven invaluable and certainly provides the association representatives with resources. Association representatives should take advantage of other associations' wins.

The Congress will again be presenting an Executive Director's session on Thursday afternoon. This will be open to all executive directors as well as any interested member association representative. Garrett Cuneo of the California Chiropractic Association has agreed to coordinate this event. One of the primary discussion topics of this session will focus on the small association and how it can provide services to its members. Again, the most important advantage of the Executive Director's session is networking with other association leaders.
