When sports chiropractors first appeared at the Olympic Games in the 1980s, it was alongside individual athletes who had experienced the benefits of chiropractic care in their training and recovery processes at home. Fast forward to Paris 2024, where chiropractic care was available in the polyclinic for all athletes, and the attitude has now evolved to recognize that “every athlete deserves access to sports chiropractic."
New Headquarters for FCER
In its ongoing quest to ensure the best possible stewardship of donated funds, the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research (FCER) recently announced the opening of a new building in Norwalk, Iowa that will serve as the foundation's permanent headquarters. Norwalk mayor Jerry Starkweather and members of the Norwalk/Des Moines community welcomed FCER's board of trustees, staff and foundation members at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sept. 26.
"FCER is in its own building for the first time in its 59-year history," enthused FCER President Vincent Lucido, DC. "Besides having spacious, attractive facilities with a lot of natural light, our move provided FCER with larger quarters in a better location, at a savings of $20,000 annually, compared with the rent we were paying. We are grateful to all of the supporters of FCER, who enable us to carry on our mission. I am personally pleased to have such pleasant accommodations in which our staff can work; they deserve it."
The investment expands FCER's office and warehouse space by nearly 50 percent while reducing monthly payments by 50 percent. By designing and building the new facility, FCER was able to guarantee that the foundation's current and future needs can be met.
An important part of the new office space is the board room, which will be used annually for FCER's board meetings. In addition to being placed in the building's center, the room also represents the heart of FCER, in that it is dedicated to Dr. and Mrs. Gerald Whitten and Dr. Arnold Cianciulli. A generous bequest from Dr. Whitten's estate allowed for the purchase of the building, and Dr. Cianciulli was a longtime member of FCER and its board of trustees. Both men and their families showed a passion for the chiropractic profession, including their commitment to the FCER. By dedicating the board room to Drs. Whitten and Cianciulli, visitors and staff will be reminded of that passion, and hopefully be inspired to emulate it.
Iowa Senator Tom Harkin (D), a perennial chiropractic advocate, was unable to attend the ceremony, but sent his best wishes in a letter read by one of his staff members: "I want to take this opportunity to say welcome to the ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony for the new Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research Headquarters. ... It's amazing how far the practice of chiropractic has come. Thanks to the track record of high-quality, low-cost, noninvasive care chiropractors provide, things have changed dramatically. But clearly, we have more work to do - and this work begins with research and education."
FCER's new address is 380 Wright Rd., Norwalk, IA 50211. Local phone numbers have changed to 515-981-9888 (phone) and 515-981-9427 (fax). The toll-free number remains the same (800-622-6309), as does the Web address (www.fcer.org).
