While there is much research taking place in the area of standards of care, the chiropractic profession presently still exists without any established levels of what quality chiropractic care is. Unfortunately, many insurance companies are developing their own "standards" to fill the void.
It is for this reason, that the Congress of Chiropractic State Associations (whose membership includes over forty state associations) first commissioned the Chiropractic Quality Assurance Conference. The Congress (COCSA) is joined by co-sponsors: the American Chiropractic Association, the International Chiropractors Association and the Canadian Chiropractic Association.
The Quality Assurance Conference has been developed to bring together prominent members of every sector of the chiropractic profession in an effort to develop a consensus from within the profession as to what constitutes quality chiropractic care. Because the conference will include all areas of the profession, it has been nicknamed the "Chiropractic Summit."
This will NOT be a "cook book" approach, which only serves to box practicing doctors into absolute restraints on treatment. Instead, this conference will review the current literature in an effort to make one representation of what quality chiropractic care consists of. The consensus statements that will come forth from this "Summit" will help to open doors for greater inclusion of chiropractic care in hospitals, with other health care professionals, and as part of the various health care plans now established and in the future.
In addition, there are several other "non-association" co-sponsors: SuperFeet In-Shoe Systems, Inc., Nutri-West, Worldwide Chiropractic Placement Services and the Motion Palpation Institute. While organizations who co-sponsor the Chiropractic Summit will not necessarily have any input in the conference itself, these organizations have seen the need for chiropractic to be able to present itself as the quality health care profession that it is.
