When sports chiropractors first appeared at the Olympic Games in the 1980s, it was alongside individual athletes who had experienced the benefits of chiropractic care in their training and recovery processes at home. Fast forward to Paris 2024, where chiropractic care was available in the polyclinic for all athletes, and the attitude has now evolved to recognize that “every athlete deserves access to sports chiropractic."
L.A. County DCs Offer Free Treatment to Help the Hungry
Next Valentine's Day (February 14, 1991), Los Angeles County residents will be invited to help the hungry and receive free chiropractic care as the Los Angeles County Chiropractic Society (LACCS) holds its second annual HOPE Day program. The Helping Other People Eat Day (HOPE) program will be held at the offices of 200 doctors of chiropractic throughout the country, according to LACCS' President Glenn P. Fischel, D.C.
The first HOPE Day program, held on Valentine's Day 1990, attracted more than 12,000 participants who received free chiropractic care in exchange for their donations of non-perishable food. This inaugural program collected more than 60,000 pounds of food, all of which was presented to LIFE (Love Is Feeding Everyone), the non-profit organization founded in 1983 by actors Dennis Weaver and Valerie Harper. LIFE helps feed 100,000 hungry people in Los Angeles County each week. The food collected on last year's HOPE Day was the largest single donation of food ever presented to LIFE.
"The first HOPE Day was like Christmas on Valentine's Day for us," says LIFE President Kitty Franklin. "We were so grateful to LACCS and the thousands of people who donated food on HOPE Day to help us feed the hungry. We are proud and excited that LACCS will again be donating their HOPE Day proceeds to us."
"Last year we were able to help the hungry of Los Angeles and, at the same time, deliver needed chiropractic care to the people of our country," Dr. Fischel says. "We are working hard to make HOPE Day an even bigger success this year. As doctors, we are concerned about the health of our communities and we can't ignore the terrible hunger problem that exists right here every day."
Participating LACCS members will accept appointments beginning December 1. People wishing to locate the participating doctor nearest them or to donate food to the campaign are invited to call LACCS at (213) 277-5335.
The Los Angeles County Chiropractic Society, a part of the California Chiropractic Association, represents 700 doctors of chiropractic located throughout Los Angeles County.
