Chiropractic Joins Education Project in Oklahoma

Editorial Staff

The Joint Chiropractic Associations of Oklahoma, in conjunction with the Oklahoma Health Ministries Association and Health Check Oklahoma, have announced the formation of the Oklahoma Wellness Campaign (OWC), the first statewide "grassroots" education-screening project designed to lower unusually high mortality figures.

Oklahoma has some of the highest death rates in the U.S. from heart disease, stroke, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and injuries, ranking 11.3% above the national average for age-adjusted death rates. Many of these deaths are thought to be due to a lack of preventive health care.

Part one of the wellness campaign will consist of an educational lecture on decreasing the risk of death through lifestyle changes, diet and regular check-ups. The lecture will include handouts and a question-and-answer session. Part two will include blood pressure tests, stroke and colorectal cancer screening, and blood exams, which will scan for the presence of cholesterol, triglycerides, and homocysteine, among other risks to the cardiovascular system.

Both parts of the campaign will be held primarily in churches, high school gymnasiums, senior citizens centers and other locations. Those interested in taking part in the OWC program are invited to contact the Joint Chiropractic Associations of Oklahoma at 918-747-4899.
