When sports chiropractors first appeared at the Olympic Games in the 1980s, it was alongside individual athletes who had experienced the benefits of chiropractic care in their training and recovery processes at home. Fast forward to Paris 2024, where chiropractic care was available in the polyclinic for all athletes, and the attitude has now evolved to recognize that “every athlete deserves access to sports chiropractic."
Standard Process Unveils Nutrition Innovation Center
The North Carolina Research Campus, a 350-acre research center in Kannapolis, North Carolina, just north of Charlotte, is a research collaborative that includes university, corporate and community partners. Prominent local academic institutions including Duke University, the University of North Carolina (three campuses), North Carolina State, N.C. AT&T University, N.C. Central University and Appalachian State University all maintain research centers.
The mission of the North Carolina Research Center is simple: "[To] improve human health through nutrition. Our scientific community of eight universities, the David H. Murdock Research Institute, global companies and entrepreneurs focus research and development on safer, more nutritious crops, healthier foods and precision nutrition."
With that mission in mind, it makes perfect sense that whole-food supplement manufacturer Standard Process would get involved. On April 24, Standard Process hosted the grand opening of its Nutrition Innovation Center, "a research and innovation facility with a mission to improve human health and well-being through whole-person clinical care, organic farming, and wholistic nutritional therapies."
According to Dr. John Troup, vice president of clinical science, education and innovation for Standard Process and head of the new 10,000 square-foot center, "What makes the Nutrition Innovation Center unique and so relevant to today's healthcare needs is that it is dedicated to the intersection of whole-person clinical care, nutritional therapies and organic agriculture. We will be focusing on developing advances in nutrition-based therapeutic care as well as conducting original clinical research demonstrating improved patient outcomes – all in support of integrative and wholistic healthcare practitioners."
In a press release announcing the ribbon-cutting event, Dr. Troup outlined the new center's four distinct programs:
- "Discovery innovation research focused on preclinical, systems biology and cell models that advance information on targeted effects of phytonutrients and nutritional solutions;
- A clinical development and research program defined by a coalition of collaborating clinical research sites that establishes a network for practice-based and case-observation studies conducted on a national basis;
- A professional media and learning center that will provide the most advanced educational tools and capabilities that will transform healthcare practitioner education and training;
- The Clinic of the Future, an integrative and functional clinical program bringing together multiple credentialed health professionals at one site where training on the practical and relevant aspects of clinical nutrition therapies are offered for all levels of practitioners."
