When sports chiropractors first appeared at the Olympic Games in the 1980s, it was alongside individual athletes who had experienced the benefits of chiropractic care in their training and recovery processes at home. Fast forward to Paris 2024, where chiropractic care was available in the polyclinic for all athletes, and the attitude has now evolved to recognize that “every athlete deserves access to sports chiropractic."
Parker University Embraces New Era
Change is in the air at Parker University, which recently announced the selection of both a new president and a new consultant for its seminar program. Dr. William Morgan joins the university as president, while Dr. Mark Sanna will consult with the university to take its seminar program to the next level.
In announcing Dr. Morgan's appointment, Dr. Oliver "Bud" Smith, chair of Parker's Board of Trustees, which conducted the nationwide search for a new president, stated:
"The Board of Trustees selected Dr. Morgan based on his depth of experience as a doctor of chiropractic, alongside his continued involvement in almost every aspect of the profession, including but not limited to his ability to integrate chiropractic into mainstream health care. [His] comprehensive skill-set will certainly lead Parker University students, faculty and alumni toward a successful future, and we are honored to appoint him as our President."
Dr. Morgan's extensive experience in military health care includes establishing the first chiropractic clinic at National Naval Medical Center (now Walter Reed National Military Medical Center) in Bethesda, Md.; serving on the United States Navy Musculoskeletal Continuum of Care Advisory Board, created to address musculoskeletal injuries among active-duty personnel; consulting with the Department of Veterans Affairs regarding implementation of the chiropractic benefit within the VA; and service as chiropractic consultant to the White House.
In fact, Admiral Mike Mullen, USN (retired) 17th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, sent a note to Board Chair Dr. Smith, lauding the board's choice for a new president:
"I am writing to express my warmest congratulations on your selection of Dr. Bill Morgan as the next president of Parker University. You simply could not have made a better choice. I have known Bill as a matchless student and practitioner of his profession over the past 13 years. He has had an enormous positive impact on thousands of lives. This impact has been that much more significant during over a decade of war where he has innovated and been on the leading edge of chiropractic practice in sometimes overwhelming circumstances. Bill is personable, studied, and dedicated beyond the call. You truly will be blessed in his service and we will miss him immensely here in Bethesda."
"I look forward to uniting with Parker University's culture of loving service and its attitude of personal ownership of our own lives and success, while simultaneously expanding Parker's influence in the world of health and wellness," said Dr. Morgan.
Dr. Mark Sanna, tapped to consult with Parker Seminars for six months (three of which remain), is the president and CEO of Breakthrough Coaching and a board member of the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress, among other distinctions. In taking on the new role, Dr. Sanna emphasized the importance of the seminar program and how he hopes to progress Parker Seminars to new heights:
"I look forward to bringing the Parker Seminars to a new level of significance for chiropractic practitioners, patients and our profession." This is the 65th anniversary of Parker Seminars and the seminars will celebrate the impact Dr. Jim Parker, the program's founder, made on the profession.
"I'm a second-generation chiropractor and I grew up going to the Parker Seminars with my family," he continued. "Chiropractors have always looked to Parker Seminars to learn how to become more successful in practice. Our local, regional and national programs will focus on the three pillars that are essential to business success: Principles, Passion and Prosperity."
"My role as president of Breakthrough Coaching has allowed me to create strong relationships throughout the chiropractic profession. I have called upon these relationships to assemble a Round Table of key stakeholders. This dedicated team of thought leaders head the most successful and respected companies and organizations in chiropractic. Their role will be to meet regularly to help ensure that Parker Seminars delivers events that make a positive impact on participants, build an engaged chiropractic community, and maintain operational excellence."
Dr. Morgan echoed Dr. Sanna's sentiments regarding the future of the Parker seminar program:
"I anticipate those who attend Parker Seminars in the years to come will experience a perceptible energetic pulse which will increase their purpose and passion for life. We will all be reminded at Parker Seminars that chiropractic is not a profession; it is a calling. Being a chiropractor is not what we do. It is much deeper; it is who we are."
