Chiropractic Summit Promotes Drug-Free Approach

First convened in 2007, the Chiropractic Summit represents leadership from approximately 40 organizations within the profession, including the  American Chiropractic Association, International Chiropractors Association, Congress of State Chiropractic Associations and Association of Chiropractic Colleges. The leadership group meets regularly to collaborate, seek solutions, and support collective action to address challenges with the common goal of advancing chiropractic.

At its latest meeting, held Nov. 7, 2013, in Seattle, summit members approved several historic statements of agreement, supporting a "drug-free approach to health care," continued recognition of the Council on Chiropractic Education, and "spinal health and well-being" as valuable marketing messages for the chiropractic profession. The summit statements read as follows:

  • "The drug issue is a non-issue because no chiropractic organization in the Summit promotes the inclusion of prescription drug rights and all chiropractic organizations in the Summit support the drug-free approach to health care."
  • "The Summit fully supports the continued recognition of [the Council on Chiropractic Education]. Even though there are some issues of concern remaining, such as CCE's governance model, many good things have occurred the last couple of years. In addition, CCE has agreed to carefully review governance models for possible improvements beginning in 2014 in connection with the Summit Roundtable."
  • "After multiple focus groups, the following marketing language was passed: The Summit acknowledges the concepts of spinal health and well-being as credible marketing messages and we encourage further efforts to refine and test such efforts."

On the heels of the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress' announcement that sports media legend Ed Goren, former vice chairman of Fox Sports, is now consulting with the foundation regarding the F4CP's newly launched Athletic TIPS (Towards Injury Prevention in Sports" program, a free community workshop for parents, coaches, trainers and educators involved in student athletics was held on Oct. 29, 2013 in Miami. The workshop, "Concussion Prevention and Recognition," focused on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations and guidance on how to manage concussions.

The workshop took place at Sun Life Stadium, home of the NFL's Miami Dolphins, and was conducted by TIPS-certified faculty members Spencer Baron, DC (Dolphins team doctor and chairman of the TIPS Professional Advisory Board); Alan Sokoloff, DC (Baltimore Ravens team doctor and chairman of TIPS education & certification); and Jay Greenstein, DC (team doctor for the Washington Redskins cheerleaders and TIPS director of certification).

"DCs are among the professionals who are well-positioned to lead these discussions and conduct workshops in their home communities, utilizing turnkey programs and marketing support from Athletic TIPS," said Kent Greenawalt, chairman of the F4CP and Athletic TIPS. "This is an unparalleled opportunity to connect with local teams and their parents, families and teachers."
