NBCE Announces Transition to Computerized Acupuncture Examination

The National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE) announced today that the acupuncture examination has been transitioned from the tradition pencil-and-paper administration to a computer-based (CB) exam. The NBCE made this move to enable students of chiropractic and chiropractic practitioners to have more frequent and more convenient access to the examination.

The first administration of the CB acupuncture exam will be Aug. 2, 2012, with a deadline of July 5, 2012, to receive applications. The exams will be administered at Pearson VUE testing centers located throughout the United States. The fee will be $625, which reflects no increase over paper-and-pencil examinations. Complete details are available in the exam information brochure, which is now on the NBCE Web site (www.nbce.org/acupuncture). The application is also available online.

Eligible applicants must have successfully completed 100 hours of instruction in acupuncture by the application deadline. The acupuncture instruction must be taken at and/or recognized by:

  1. One of the chiropractic colleges whose students are currently eligible to take the NBCE examinations; these colleges are listed on the NBCE Web site.
  2. A college or university accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

It is important to note that scores will not be available at the testing center; scores will be verified by the NBCE, and score letters will be sent directly to examinees and licensing authorities three weeks following the exam. Upon successful completion of the acupuncture examination, examinees will receive a Certificate of Attainment free of charge from the NBCE. Engraved certificates will also be able for an additional fee. Order forms for engraved certificates will be included with the score letter.

Radicular-like pain of the upper and lower extremities is among the most common presentations in musculoskeletal and spine-related practice. Traditionally, these symptoms are interpreted through a disc-centric and dermatomal framework, often leading clinicians to attribute limb pain, paresthesia or perceived weakness to spinal nerve-root pathology. While this approach is appropriate in cases of true radiculopathy, it frequently falls short when symptoms fail to follow consistent dermatomal patterns or correlate poorly with imaging findings.

A 46-year-old male presented to our clinic with a seven-year history of recurrent low back pain with sciatica. He reported stiffness and discomfort that worsened with prolonged sitting both at his desk job and during evening television time. The patient had seen multiple chiropractors over the years. In every case, spinal manipulation and other passive treatments would bring gradual symptom relief over 2-3 months. However, within another 3-6 months, the symptoms would return. Frustrated – and now considering a spinal injection and possibly surgery if that failed, he came to our office seeking a different approach.
