Anglo-European College of Chiropractic Student Wins FICS Scholarship

Anglo-European College of Chiropractic (AECC) student Sharon Sackey has won an International Federation of Sports Chiropractic / Federation Internationale de Chiropratique du Sport (FICS) scholarship sponsored by Foot Levelers. Thirty-eight students from 21 colleges applied for the scholarship; this is the second consecutive year that an AECC student has won. Last year, Catherine Hughes was successful in her application.

The FICS is comprised of national chiropractic sports councils worldwide and individual members, and has affiliations with international organizations within the chiropractic profession and the world of sports. Each year, the FICS awards four student scholarships as part of their campaign to promote high standards of education and practice in sports chiropractic worldwide. The application process comprises of an essay on the applicants' personal involvement and contributions to sports chiropractic, as well as a supporting recommendation.

As a clinical student at the AECC, Sharon has frequently been involved in establishing and increasing the sports therapy programs at the college, as well as helping to start a student chapter of the British Chiropractic Sports Council on campus. She continues to be an active member of the sports injuries assessment and treatment team on campus and is involved in the assessment and care of elite amateur athletes, both professional athletes and recreational participants.

The director of the AECC clinic, Ed Rothman, said: "Sharon has worked exceptionally hard to develop these programmes within the clinic. Besides working with our sports therapy team, she is a supervisor in our busy rehabilitation and exercise centre. Over many discussions, Sharon has expressed her interest in developing clinical acumen in the assessment and treatment of athletes. Sharon has shown great organisational skills as a member of the student management committee for our sports and injury/therapy team. It is because of Sharon we will have a student chapter of the British Chiropractic Sports Council on campus."

Said Sharon: "It's such an honour to have won this award. Balancing clinic life, studying and extra activities such as Sprint and the BCSC student chapter has been challenging, so it's great to have my efforts acknowledged by FICS. I am proud to have won the award for the AECC and I hope this will encourage many more students to apply in the coming years."

The AECC Bournemouth Clinic is a teaching clinic where interns receive hands on experience under the close supervision of our world-class faculty. The clinic is one of the largest in Europe and provides specialist facilities such as athlete assessment and improvement, sports-injury prevention and rehabilitation, diagnostic ultrasound, nutrition and lifestyle consultation, and more.
