On Oct. 22, the same day Life Chiropractic College West President Gerry Clum, DC, officially announced he would be stepping down after 30 years of leadership at the college, Life West Chairman of the Board, Dr. Carl Dieter, announced the appointment of Brian Kelly, DC, as president-designee. As of press time, Dr. Kelly will assume the role of president effective January 2011, with transition details set to be worked out in the coming weeks. A native of New Zealand, Dr. Kelly has served as president of the New Zealand College of Chiropractic for the past seven years.
"Brian Kelly is, in the opinion of the Board of Regents of the College, the perfect person to follow in Dr. Clum's footsteps," said Dr. Dieter in making the announcement. "He has a solid track record of performance, an appreciation for the global demands related to chiropractic education and the personal and professional skills Life West will need as it transitions from a long-seated president to new leadership."
According to Dr. Clum, Kelly "is one of the shining stars of the chiropractic profession, bringing a superb blend of experience, talent, enthusiasm and dedication to the future of the college - I couldn't be happier for Brian, for the board, for the college or for the profession!"

As president of the New Zealand College of Chiropractic, Dr. Kelly guided the college through recognition by the New Zealand Ministry of Education and then by the Commission on Accreditation of the Australasian Council on Chiropractic Education. Also under Dr. Kelly's tenure, the college became a test site in 2008 for the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners exams (parts I-III), and in 2010, introduced a diplomate program in diagnostic imaging through the American Chiropractic Board of Radiology (DACBR). In so doing, the New Zealand College of Chiropractic became the first chiropractic college outside North America to offer a diagnostic imaging residency.
Among his other professional accomplishments, Dr. Kelly was named the 2001 Chiropractor of the Year by the Chiropractors Association of Australia (Victoria), the 2007 International Chiropractor of the Year by Parker Seminars and the 2009 Chiropractor of the Year by the New Zealand Chiropractors' Association. He is a 2001 graduate of the Phillip Institute of Technology (now the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology - RMIT) in Melbourne, Australia.
