Sherman College of Chiropractic in Spartanburg, S.C., is now an affiliated college of the International Chiropractors Association (ICA). The ICA Board of Directors unanimously voted to accept Sherman's application for affiliation at its annual meeting on April 30 in Dallas.
"This is a historic day for both ICA and Sherman and is an affiliation that is long overdue," said ICA President Dr. Gary Walsemann. There is a historical connection between Sherman College and ICA. Dr. Lyle Sherman, a pioneer in the development of modern chiropractic after whom the college is named, served as assistant director of the B.J. Palmer Chiropractic Research Clinic in Davenport, Iowa. The ICA was founded by Dr. B.J. Palmer in 1926 and Dr. Sherman served on ICA's Board of Control (predecessor of the current Board of Directors) in the 1950s (when Dr. Palmer was president) and was honored as ICA's Chiropractor of the Year in 1955.
"As an affiliated chiropractic educational institution," Dr. Walsemann added, "Sherman is joining ICA to promote the purposes and ideals of ICA to advance chiropractic throughout the world as a distinct health care profession predicated upon its unique philosophy, science, and art, grounded in the location, analysis and correction of vertebral subluxation. We are excited about this partnership and another opportunity to empower and influence future chiropractors as well as draw on the counsel and advice of the Sherman College leadership."
Sherman College is the ninth chiropractic institution in the United States to become an affiliate of the ICA. The other chiropractic institutions are the three Palmer colleges, Cleveland Chiropractic College (Los Angeles and Kansas City campuses), Life University, Life West and Parker College.
