When sports chiropractors first appeared at the Olympic Games in the 1980s, it was alongside individual athletes who had experienced the benefits of chiropractic care in their training and recovery processes at home. Fast forward to Paris 2024, where chiropractic care was available in the polyclinic for all athletes, and the attitude has now evolved to recognize that “every athlete deserves access to sports chiropractic."
Sherman College to Offer Yellow Ribbon GI Benefits to Veterans
Military veterans earning their degrees as part of the national Yellow Ribbon Program will get a hand from Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic beginning with the fall quarter of 2009.
Established by the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008, the Yellow Ribbon Program allows institutions of higher learning in the United States to voluntarily enter into an agreement with the Veterans Administration to fund tuition expenses that exceed the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition rate. The institution will wave a portion of the student's tuition costs in the form of a scholarship and the VA will match the same amount as the institution.
Qualifying Sherman students will receive a $2,000 Yellow Ribbon Scholarship per quarter, $1,000 of which is funded by Sherman and $1,000 of which is matched by the VA. The scholarship reduces tuition for post-9/11 veterans by nearly a third. This program applies only to students matriculating after Sept. 29, 2009.
Director of Financial Aid Kathy Wilson looks forward to working with more of the nation's post-9/11 veterans through this program: "The Yellow Ribbon Program offers a tremendous opportunity to serve and honor our veterans who give so much to our country. We're eager to get this program started and proud to be able to help cover the cost of a college education for people who have served our country. I think it's especially fitting at Sherman College, as service to others is a major component of our mission."
Only individuals entitled to the maximum benefit rate (based on service requirements) may receive this funding. They may be eligible if they served an aggregate period of active duty after Sept. 10, 2001, of at least 36 months; were honorably discharged from active duty for a service-connected disability and served 30 continuous days after Sept. 10, 2001; and are a dependent eligible for Transfer of Entitlement under the Post-9/11 GI Bill based on a veteran's service under the eligibility criteria listed above.
If the cost tuition and fees exceed the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition, additional funds may be available for their education program without an additional charge to their entitlement.
