Chiropractor Elected President of Hawaii Public Health Association

Andrew C. Cohen, DC, was recently elected president of the Hawaii Public Health Association (HPHA), marking the first time a doctor of chiropractic has been appointed to the HPHA board in any capacity in the association's 61-year history.

"I see this as an opportunity to increase cooperation between the chiropractors in Hawaii and the public health community," said Dr. Cohen in an e-mail interview. In addition to his duties with the HPHA, Dr. Cohen maintains a practice in Honolulu and serves as secretary of the Hawaii State Chiropractic Association.

The HPHA is a multidisciplinary network of professional health organizations and coalitions, which includes health care practitioners from all the islands within the collective state of Hawaii.

Dr. Cohen joins the ranks of other chiropractors involved with multidisciplinary, statewide organizations, including Karen Konarski-Hart, DC, DABCO, who was elected president of the Arkansas State Board of Health earlier this year, and Mitchell Haas, DC, who was recently appointed president of the Oregon Public Health Association.

Dr. Cohen hopes to use his new post to educate others on the board and around the state on the benefits of chiropractic care. "When the time is right, I expect to open others up to chiropractic who initially were closed to the profession," he said. "I think that the more we step out of our circles and become leaders of other groups within other health care professions ... [chiropractors] gain acceptance."

Editor's note: Dr. Konarski-Hart was the subject of a two-part feature, "Chiropractic in Mainstream Public Health," which appeared in the Sept. 28 and Oct. 12, 2006 issues of DC. Dr. Haas is featured in this issue; click here to see "Western States Receives $2.8 Million Grant."

Cleveland Chiropractic College Donation Helps At-Risk Children in Kansas City

Library personnel and the staff council at the Cleveland Chiropractic College's Kansas City campus (CCCKC) solicited the donation of school supplies to benefit children at the Spofford Home, a residential center that provides preventive and therapeutic services for at-risk children. The supply drive was held at CCCKC from Aug. 1-16, 2006; all supplies collected were delivered to the Spofford Home on Aug. 22.

The drive was held in conjunction with the local United Way's effort to collect school supplies for families in need. The college has participated in the United Way's "Day of Caring" event each of the past four years, but this was the first year of participation in the school supply drive. CCCKC's United Way coordinator, Marcia Thomas, hopes to make the drive an annual event.

"Everyone who participated in this project needs to know how much their contributions mean to the children of Spofford," said Thomas. "These children, some of them as young as four, are all victims of severe abuse and neglect. So, kindness and generosity from adults is something that, unfortunately, they are not accustomed to experiencing. We're hoping that with our efforts we can make a difference in their lives."
