Dr. S.M. Elliott, president of the Texas Chiropractic College (TCC), recently announced that Thomas D. Schultea, Ph.D., has been appointed vice president for academic affairs.
Dr. Schultea holds degrees in biomedical sciences and veterinary anatomy from Texas A & M University, and has done post doctorate studies in neuroendocrinology. He has lectured in the Texas A & M University department of veterinary anatomy, served as assistant professor in the Ohio State University department of veterinary anatomy, and has lectured in the division of biology at San Jacinto College. Dr. Schultea came to TCC in 1988 and since then he has served as assistant and associate professor of the anatomy department, department head for the anatomy department, dean of the basic science division, computer coordinator and director of research.
Dr. Schultea has a special interest in the research field. He has participated in projects at M.D. Anderson Hospital and numerous Texas A & M University projects. His main research interests include reproductive endocrinology, peptide neurotransmitters, environmental pollutant induced mutation, and electromagnetically induced bone growth. His current research projects include the ontogeny of peptidergic and catecolaminergic substances found in the primate ovary, the ability of alcohol to suppress the effects of excitatory amino acids on LHRH secretion, and the establishment of hypothalamic cell culture as an in vitro model for the study of LHRH synthesis.
He has been a member of search committees, faculty development committees, and student affairs committees at Texas A&M and Ohio State University. A number of Dr. Schultea's research papers have been published and he serves as a text book reviewer for Oxford Press, Saunders, Springer Verlag, as well as Williams and Wilkins publishers.

Dr. Louis Sportelli received the Lee-Homewood Chiropractic Heritage Award during the annual conference of the Association for the History of Chiropractic (AHC). During his nearly 60-year career, Dr. Sportelli has embodied the spirit of the award, given to “living individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the chiropractic profession.”
Presently there is no consensus on the best treatment for Achilles tendon rupture; and its management is still controversial. The treatment options are conservative treatment and surgical repair. With either treatment, be it conservative or surgical, Achilles tendon tears necessitate prolonged recovery and rehabilitative management.
