CliniCorp Completes Acquisition of Health Care Aware

CliniCorp, Inc. announced that it has acquired the California based Health Care Aware (HCA), a preferred provider organization with a network of over 900 chiropractors serving more than 3.2 million subscribers. The announcement was made jointly by Robert S. Goldsamt, chairman and chief executive officer of CliniCorp, and Dr. Frederick Derfler, his counterpart at HCA.

Said Mr. Goldsamt: "This acquisition represents CliniCorp's entry into managed health care. It is the first step in the company's plan to expand the availability of a cost-effective segment of health care primarily treating back problems that impair 80 percent of Americans at some time during their adult lives."

CliniCorp owns 26 chiropractic clinics in Florida and Texas, and has agreements in principle to acquire over 160 clinics in 11 states.

 



New Director of Research Appointed at NYCC

Wesley K. Canfield, M.D. was recently appointed Director of Research at New York Chiropractic College (NYCC). Dr. Canfield received his M.D. from SUNY Health Sciences at Syracuse in 1976, and has pursued advanced studies at Cornell University. He received the Eli Lilly award in 1976 from SUNY Upstate Medical. Dr. Canfield completed his internship and residency at the University of Florida Department of Pediatrics in Gainesville, Florida, and completed a fellowship with the Pediatrics Department of the University of Colorado.

Dr. Canfield served on the Admissions and the Pediatric Research Committees of the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and the Grant Review Committee of the ADA North Dakota Affiliate. Named the Pediatric Intern of the Year from the University of Florida, Dr. Canfield is a full member of the American Institute of Nutrition and the American Society for Clinical Nutrition.

Prior to his appointment, Dr. Canfield was a senior research associate at Cornell University, and also has been a supervisory medical officer with the USDA Human Nutrition in Grand Forks, North Dakota. In addition to his duties as director of research, he also teaches courses in clinical nutrition and research methods at NYCC.

 



New York Chiropractic Council Awards Scholarship

The New York Chiropractic Council, in conjunction with the Nuzzi Financial Network, awarded its first annual chiropractic student scholarship to New York Chiropractic College's eighth trimester student Marisa Carey. The $1,000 check was presented by Mr. James Nuzzi, president of Nuzzi Financial Network, at the council's annual convention.

Applications for the scholarship were sent to all chiropractic colleges: students from six different colleges responded by submitting research papers on the "Relationship of the Vertebral Subluxation Complex to Organic Dysfunction." Ms. Carey's winning paper will be published in the April issue of the council's journal, New Directions.

 



Palmer Reps Attend Washington Luncheon for Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin

Representatives from the Palmer University system attended a luncheon in Washington, D.C. to honor Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) for his legislative efforts on behalf of the chiropractic profession during the last Congressional session. The senator and his staff played a role in increasing HEAL loans to $340 million from $290 million, authorizing the first chiropractic training and demonstration projects, and earmarking federal funds for chiropractic research.

Palmer representatives in attendance included Chancellor of Palmer Chiropractic University Michael Crawford; PCC International Alumni Association President Dr. Robert Brooks; Student Council President Dave Lenihan; Palmer alumnus and Iowa Chiropractic Society President Dr. Mark Kruse; Palmer Director of Marketing and Communications Juan Nodarse; and Executive Director of Institutional Advancement Gary Mohr.

 



Palmer Raises Record Amount for Toys for Tots

The Palmer Student Alumni Association (PSAF) raised $1,700 for the local Toys for Tots drive in the Quad Cities community. Student organizations making contributions to the drive included the Palmer Student Council, the staff of Palmer's student newspaper The Beacon, the student ACA and ICA, and the campus Veteran's Club. PSAF President Harry Arcarese presented a check for Toys for Tots on local television station WQAD-TV.

In addition to contributing to Toys for Tots, Palmer's student ICA held a clothing drive to benefit the John Lewis Coffee Shop for the Homeless and the Wittenmeyer Youth Center. The Palmer Staff Council sponsored the Angel Tree program, which purchases gifts for needy children.

 



Life Professor Heads Thermography Society and Hospital's Chiro Services

Andrew H. Krantz, D.C., chairman of technical studies at Life College, has been named president of the American Chiropractic Thermographic Society (ACTS). In his one-year term, Dr. Krantz says that he plans to work toward including thermography in the basic curriculum leading to the DC degree and CT certificate at chiropractic colleges. He said, "Our goal is to train doctors of chiropractic to utilize chiropractic thermography and to further develop the heat patterns that were developed by Dr. B.J. Palmer. Additionally, we want to train chiropractic technicians throughout the profession to be skilled as thermographic technicians." The society was founded in 1981 and has over 300 members. Dr. Krantz has been a member since 1986 and received his ACTS diplomate in 1989.

Dr. Krantz was also appointed chief of chiropractic services for the eighth consecutive year at Woodstock Community Hospital in Georgia. He was first granted full staff privileges in 1983, and was named chief of chiropractic services in 1985.
