When sports chiropractors first appeared at the Olympic Games in the 1980s, it was alongside individual athletes who had experienced the benefits of chiropractic care in their training and recovery processes at home. Fast forward to Paris 2024, where chiropractic care was available in the polyclinic for all athletes, and the attitude has now evolved to recognize that “every athlete deserves access to sports chiropractic."
The 1995 Official Souvenir Parade Program
1995 Rose Queen Aliya Haque with Grand Marshall Chi Chi Rodriquez.
The chiropractic centennial float will be #86 in the "order of march." The souvenir parade program tells readers: "Celebrating a century of chiropractic care, 'A Salute to America's Finest,' features athletes from around the world. A 40-foot-tall eagle majestically spreads its wings as a powerful symbol of excellence."
The Rose Parade -- Celebrating Chiropractic's Centennial
The Jan. 2, 1995 issue of "DC" coincides with the an historic day for chiropractic: the first chiropractic float in the 106 years of the Rose Parade.
If all began on new year's day in 1890 with the members of Pasadena's Valley Hunt Club, mostly former residents of the East Coast. They found the magnificent "winter" weather of new year's day in Southern California was a perfect excuse for a day of picnicking and sports. Some 2,000 celebrants witnessed ostrich, chariot, elephant and camel races, tugs of war, jousts, and a score of other off-beat contests.
The Rose Bowl Game didn't begin until 1902, with Stanford drubbing Michigan 49-0. The rout led officials to suspend the bowl until 1916. Since 1946, the Rose Bowl Game has matched the champions of the Big Ten and the Pac-10.
This year's parade celebrates is "Sports -- Quest for Excellence," and thus all the 110 participating floats have a sports theme. Chiropractic's float will feature notable sports figures along for the ride on chiropractic's centennial float. The Grand Marshall for the parade will be golfing's beloved Chi Chi Rodriguez. Over the course of his 26-year PGA career, he posted eight tour victories; on the Senior PGA Tour the past eight years, he has 22 wins.
