When sports chiropractors first appeared at the Olympic Games in the 1980s, it was alongside individual athletes who had experienced the benefits of chiropractic care in their training and recovery processes at home. Fast forward to Paris 2024, where chiropractic care was available in the polyclinic for all athletes, and the attitude has now evolved to recognize that “every athlete deserves access to sports chiropractic."
HIV/AIDS Chiropractic Clinic Opens in Chicago
Dion Richetti, DC, director of the AIDS Alternative Health Project: "I know of no other chiropractic center in the U.S. focused on the unique and diverse needs of the HIV/AIDS population."
The AIDS Alternative Health Project (AAHP) has opened the HESSCO Center for HIV/AIDS Rehabilitation in Chicago with a June 3rd reception and open house at the HESSCO Center. THE HESSCO Center is the first and only specialized chiropractic and physical therapy HIV/AIDS clinic in Chicago, and perhaps the nation. Attendees toured the HESSCO Center and the AAHP's newly expanded Uptown Clinic.
The AIDS Alternative Health Project was founded in 1986 by a small group of DCs, acupuncturists, and massage therapists committed to providing care complementary to the medical care the AIDS/HIV patients were receiving. (See "Another Kind of Chicago Hope" in the Jan. 27, 1997 issue of DC.) The AAHP operates through a corps of 90 paid and volunteer health care practitioners: chiropractors, massage therapists, psychologists, acupuncturists and yoga specialists.
"I know of no other chiropractic center in the U.S. focused on the unique and diverse needs of the HIV/AIDS population, " said Dion Richetti, DC, AAHP medical director. "AAHP clients need help in achieving their maximum level of physical health and functioning, and to adjusting to life-long physical limitations.
The AAHP staff paid tribute to HESSCO Inc., a leading chiropractic and physical therapy equipment supplier/distributor that has provided in large part the HESSCO Center's equipment. "It's my hope that the HESSCO Center will help AAHP clients lead longer, healthier lives, and that new learning will take place," said David Schultz of HESSCO, Inc.
The AAHP also showcased its new partnership with the National College of Chiropractic, where it has established an internship rotation at the HESSCO Center.
Start-up financial support for the development of the HESSCO Center was provided by the John Baran Fund, the Uptown Bank Building management, and the Uptown National Bank of Chicago.
