Clean Sourcing:
The Part of the Fish Oil Story Nobody Puts on the Label

Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA are among the most researched nutrients in the supplement aisle, with decades of data supporting their role in cardiovascular, cognitive, and inflammatory health. But a fish oil is only as good as the water it came from and the care taken between the catch and the capsule. Two problems separate an excellent oil from a mediocre one, and neither is visible to the consumer.

Contaminants concentrate up the food chain. Methylmercury, dioxins, PCBs, and other persistent organic pollutants accumulate in fatty tissue, so long-lived predatory species carry the heaviest burden1. This is why sourcing decisions made years before a bottle is filled matter more than anything printed on it. Oils drawn from small, short-lived, cold-water species (anchovy, sardine, mackerel) start from a lower contaminant baseline. Responsible manufacturers then verify that baseline rather than assume it, testing incoming raw material and finished lots against defined limits for heavy metals, dioxins, and PCBs2.

Oxidation is the failure nobody tastes until it's obvious. Long-chain polyunsaturated fats are chemically fragile; heat, light, and oxygen degrade them into aldehydes and peroxides. Independent analyses have repeatedly found commercial fish oils exceeding voluntary rancidity thresholds, and in some cases failing to deliver labeled EPA and DHA content3,4. Rancid oil isn't merely unpleasant; its oxidation products may blunt the benefits for which it was purchased. The industry benchmarks here are peroxide value, p-anisidine, and TOTOX, alongside protective measures like nitrogen blanketing, cold processing, and antioxidant stabilization2.

Provenance claims are only as strong as the testing behind them. Any brand can print a species and a country of origin on a bottle, but far fewer can prove it. Independent origin verification closes that gap. ORIVO, a Norwegian analytical firm, uses nuclear magnetic resonance fingerprinting to confirm both the species and the geographic catch region of a marine oil, comparing the sample against a reference database of authenticated oils, a check performed on blind samples, so the result reflects what is actually in the container rather than what the paperwork says5.
