When sports chiropractors first appeared at the Olympic Games in the 1980s, it was alongside individual athletes who had experienced the benefits of chiropractic care in their training and recovery processes at home. Fast forward to Paris 2024, where chiropractic care was available in the polyclinic for all athletes, and the attitude has now evolved to recognize that “every athlete deserves access to sports chiropractic."
New Campus for Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College
TORONTO - Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, which sold its existing property on Bayview Avenue and purchased a new campus property at 6100 Leslie Street, is expected to begin official operations at the new campus in 2004. The property will encompass five acres on the west side of Leslie Street, surrounded by a wooded conservation area and the Don River. It has an existing floor area of 115,000 square feet on three and a half floors, and has zoning approval for construction of an additional 35,000 square feet.
According to CMCC President Jean Moss, DC, MBA, size was the deciding factor dictating the move: "For many years, CMCC has struggled with a campus that is too small. It has been hindered by insufficient facilities for the growing demands of our student body, faculty and staff. Put simply: We outgrew the campus, both in capacity and the amenities it housed."
The 58-year-old college is raising funds for the state-of-the-art campus with its "Hands on the Future" campaign. Allen Stern, CMCC's vice president of institutional advancement, explained the rationale behind the campaign: "The expected support needed to complete a facility that provides modern technology and a comfortable environment for our students, researchers, faculty and staff will be $30 million. The Hands on the Future campaign goal is to raise the funds to complete this project and provide a campus that will be recognized as a world-class chiropractic education and research facility."
Dr. Moss echoed Mr. Stern's sentiments: We are entering an exciting new chapter in CMCC's history. After more than 57 years of educating and training chiropractors, CMCC has grown into one of the most pre-eminent institutions of its kind.... Now, we are building and raising support for our new state-of-the-art campus. We are making a new home for CMCC that will reflect and showcase our commitment to leading-edge chiropractic education and research."
The campaign has appointed chairs in every province. According to Vince Sinclair, DC, national co-chair (chiropractic profession) of the campaign, "These provincial chairs will be working chiropractors right across Canada to ensure we realize our goals."
"We are extremely pleased with the support we have received so far," added Dr. Sinclair. "CMCC's Board of Governors, Governors' Club, faculty, staff, members, alumni, and even current students are all making significant gifts." The corporate sector is also making significant contributions: The Kolter Corporation has already supported the campaign with a $2 million gift, and the national co-chair (private sector) is Len Goodman, president of First Financial Corporation.
On Oct. 16, CMCC will hold a gala event at the Sheraton Centre Ballroom in downtown Toronto in support of the Hands on the Future campaign. For details on the event, or for more information on the progress of CMCC's new campus, visit www.cmcc.ca or call (416) 482-2340.
