Solving the WorlD's Musculoskeletal Health Crisis

An international research team, including Dr. Deborah Kopansky Giles of Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, has found that musculoskeletal health – the prevention and management of low back pain, arthritis, osteoporosis, fractures, etc. – is globally underprioritized despite being recognized as the world's leading cause of pain and disability. Commissioned by the Global Alliance for Musculoskeletal Health and with primary funding by the Bone and Joint Foundation, the team's research yielded a report that identifies gaps and trends in health policies relative to musculoskeletal health, with eight recommended actions that will enable countries worldwide to address such gaps. You can download the report, "‘Towards a Global Strategy to Improve Musculoskeletal Health," at https://gmusc.com/. The team's research will also be published shortly in Global Health Research and Policy and BMJ Global Health.

"The design that led to this blueprint was inclusive, enabling MSK stakeholders from countries of various levels of economic health to provide their perspectives," said Dr. Kopansky-Giles in a CMCC press release. "Input was solicited from patients, health advocates, clinicians, teachers, policy makers and researchers to ensure a breadth of perspectives. The blueprint provides an excellent baseline from which Canada, other countries and the WHO can use to build their MSK health policies."

Uganda Chiropractors Rejoice

Uganda's Allied Health Professions Council has at last recognized the chiropractic profession, with legislation finalized and a chiropractic registrar opened according to the World Federation of Chiropractic. As confirmed by Dr. Charles Sebwana, president of the Chiropractic Association of Uganda, the country's five chiropractors received pre-registration assessments in June at Mulago Hospital in Kampala. The news comes after two decades of hard work.

"Public utilization of chiropractic services is on the increase," said Dr. Sebwana. "The next step is to establish chiropractic education. We are grateful to both the WFC and African Chiropractic Federation for their support."
