When sports chiropractors first appeared at the Olympic Games in the 1980s, it was alongside individual athletes who had experienced the benefits of chiropractic care in their training and recovery processes at home. Fast forward to Paris 2024, where chiropractic care was available in the polyclinic for all athletes, and the attitude has now evolved to recognize that “every athlete deserves access to sports chiropractic."
A Chiro. School Is Coming to Kentucky?
Campbellsville University likely isn't a household name, despite the fact that the Christian institution has existed for 115 years and awards certificates, associate, bachelor, master and doctoral degrees. More than 13,000 students call Campbellsville U. their academic home, either on the primary campus in Campbellsville, Ky., or satellite instructional campuses within the state. (The university even has an instructional campus in Costa Mesa, Calif.)
Within the chiropractic profession, however, Campbellsville may soon become tip of tongue, as it anticipates welcoming students into its new Chiropractic School during the 2021-22 academic year, as noted by Dennis Short, DC, Campbellsville dean of chiropractic operations, in a recent correspondence with the Kentucky Association of Chiropractors. Dr. Short provided other insights into the new chiropractic program at that time, excerpted as follows:
"Campbellsville University is excited about the prospects for our new Chiropractic School. Despite the Covid-19 epidemic, the university is continuing with its quest to establish Kentucky's first chiropractic program."
"The chiropractic school will become the focal point of a mini university community, replicating much of what is found on the university's main campus, 1¼ hour drive south."
"Prior to the inception of the Campbellsville chiropractic program, many chiropractors, especially new graduates, were asked about ways in which to improve chiropractic education. Business knowledge, patient management, and clinical readiness were among the most mentioned. Listening to those concerns, the Campbellsville Chiropractic School leadership intends to better prepare the next generation of graduates for successful chiropractic practices."
Campbellsville University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges (COS) of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The chiropractic program has applied for Council on Chiropractic Education accreditation, but as of 2020, had not received full approval. The CCE's 2021 report on accreditation actions should be released soon. Stay tuned.
