When sports chiropractors first appeared at the Olympic Games in the 1980s, it was alongside individual athletes who had experienced the benefits of chiropractic care in their training and recovery processes at home. Fast forward to Paris 2024, where chiropractic care was available in the polyclinic for all athletes, and the attitude has now evolved to recognize that “every athlete deserves access to sports chiropractic."
Mourning the Passing of a Chiropractic Warrior and International Leader
James M. Sigafoose, DC, FICA, passed away on the afternoon of Thursday, July 3, 2014 after a short illness, surrounded by his family. Recognized worldwide for his inspirational chiropractic philosophy and motivational teaching, Dr. Sigafoose has been a powerful leader, teacher and inspiration to generations of chiropractors. He also authored many books and a variety of audio and video educational products utilized by chiropractors all over the world. He will be sorely missed.
"He was a mentor and inspiration to countless thousands of chiropractors around the world, myself included," said International Chiropractors Association (ICA) President, Dr. Michael S. McLean. "I was proud to be his friend and colleague and so deeply honored that we were able to have him contribute so generously of his wisdom and experience as the keynote speaker at ICA's June 2014 Annual Meeting in Kansas City."
Dr. Sigafoose was also unanimously selected by the ICA Board of Directors to be the 2014 recipient of the Dr. Herbert Ross Reaver Award, in celebration of his lifetime of dedicated and courageous service and sacrifice, and his powerful and lasting legacy on behalf of the ICA and the chiropractic profession.
Upon graduating from high school, Dr. Sigafoose served in the U.S. Army for two years and received his chiropractic education at National College. His pathway to his unique and powerful understanding of chiropractic science and philosophy led him through a great variety of learning experiences, all of which enabled him to articulate and explain what is important in a successful chiropractic practice like no other speaker.
Dr. Sigafoose married his beloved wife, Patsy, in 1954 and they had seven children, one of whom passed away at a young age. All six other children followed in his footsteps and became chiropractors. In addition, a son-in-law, a nephew and a daughter-in-law are also chiropractors.
Dr Sigafoose's overarching goal was to instill the timeless philosophy that was his mantra: "TO SERVE FOR THE SAKE OF SERVING, TO GIVE FOR THE SAKE OF GIVING, and TO LOVE FOR THE SAKE OF LOVING".
"ICA will keep its members informed of funeral plans and family wishes as they become known to us," said Dr. McLean. "This is a sad day for us all."
