The NCMIC Foundation awarded James Whedon, DC, MS, with the Jerome F. McAndrews, D.C., Memorial Research Fund Award on March 15, 2013, at the Association of Chiropractic Colleges Educational Conference and Research Agenda Conference (ACC-RAC).
Dr. Whedon was selected for this award for his timely and applicable research that will advance the health of the U.S. public. Dr. Whedon's research investigates longitudinal trends and geographic variations in chiropractic availability, utilization and costs for adults over age 65, which will be especially applicable as the percentage of the population covered by Medicare increases. His research also evaluates the safety of chiropractic care and risks of complications associated with chiropractic care of older adults.
Specifically, Dr. Whedon is evaluating the incidence and risk of stroke in older adults following chiropractic spinal manipulation. He is also assessing the risk of physical injury to the head, neck and trunk in older adults following chiropractic spinal manipulation. His research will evaluate the absolute risk of these adverse events, and also compare the risk to that associated with visits to other healthcare providers.
As chiropractic becomes more integrated into the mainstream health-care system, decision-makers must determine whether inclusion of chiropractic services will result in better quality, accessibility and affordability. At the American Public Health Association's 2012 annual conference, Dr. Whedon presented a paper titled: "Another Look at the Budget Neutrality of the Medicare Chiropractic Services Demonstration: Preliminary Findings." Dr. Whedon was a co-investigator on this study, which was a cross-disciplinary investigation led by The Dartmouth Institute for Health policy and Clinical Practice.
In his presentation, Dr. Whedon described geographic patterns of utilization and costs under the demonstration, with a focus on cost outliers among the chiropractic demonstration sites. The findings of this study will help policy-makers interpret recent government reports and inform future research on the cost of chiropractic services provided under Medicare.
Dr. Whedon has published numerous articles in PubMed indexed journals, collaborated with other researchers on these studies, and presented his work at national research conferences, including ACC-RAC, the Annual Meeting of the American Public Health Association, and the International Research Congress on Integrative Medicine and Health. The results of his research can be applied to day-to-day practice and may be generalizable to the older U.S. adult population. Thus, the results can inform national health care policy and future research on a broad level.

Dr. Louis Sportelli received the Lee-Homewood Chiropractic Heritage Award during the annual conference of the Association for the History of Chiropractic (AHC). During his nearly 60-year career, Dr. Sportelli has embodied the spirit of the award, given to “living individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the chiropractic profession.”
Presently there is no consensus on the best treatment for Achilles tendon rupture; and its management is still controversial. The treatment options are conservative treatment and surgical repair. With either treatment, be it conservative or surgical, Achilles tendon tears necessitate prolonged recovery and rehabilitative management.
