The winner of the Second Annual Lincoln College Education and Research Fund Prize is Gert Bronfort, DC, PhD, vice president of research at Northwestern Health Sciences University. The award was presented by Dr. John Mayer at the Florida Chiropractic Association's National Convention in Orlando, Fla. Dr. Mayer is the Lincoln College Endowed Chair at the University of South Florida.
The Lincoln Prize is awarded to a chiropractic researcher who has demonstrated clinical research excellence in chiropractic care over the past three years (2009-2011). Dr. Bronforts' clinical research in the fields of manual therapies, headaches, back and neck pain has been published in numerous prestigious journals including the Annals of Internal Medicine. The Lincoln Prize is funded and supported by the Lincoln College Education & Research Fund (LCERF), the Florida Foundation and the Florida Chiropractic Association.
Dr. Ken Padgett, LCERF's chairman of the Board of Trustees, announced at the Annual Meeting that LCERF will be attempting to develop a more national presence by raising the overall awareness and increasing the level of support and funding that LCERF provides for chiropractic education and research. LCERF is requesting contributions from individuals as well as corporate donors.
Dr. Padgett stated that in order to increase the level of giving, additional funds will be needed. The Board of Trustees encourages all members of the chiropractic profession to consider a charitable gift to LCERF, either as direct contribution or as a bequeath. In addition, we are asking the venders and corporations that sell supplies and equipment to the profession to consider contributing to LCERF to help us increase our funding for chiropractic research and student scholarships.
The Board of Trustees' goal for the coming year is to increase LCERF's support and funding for the Lincoln College Endowed Chair in Chiropractic and Biomechanical Research at the University of South Florida. USF is a Carnegie Tier 1 "very high research activity" university and is currently ranked in the top 50 U.S. research universities. The Lincoln Chair's research program at USF remains the only endowed chiropractic research program at a U.S. college of medicine. This interprofessional setting gives the chiropractic profession a unique opportunity to advance chiropractic research in ways that may not be possible at other institutions.
LCERF hopes the profession will continue to recognize the need and support the works of Dr. Bronfort and Dr. Mayer, as well as other chiropractic research that is currently being conducted. It is through scientific, evidence-based research that the chiropractic profession can continue to contribute and make an impact on the health of humankind. Dr. Louis Sportelli received the Lee-Homewood Chiropractic Heritage Award during the annual conference of the Association for the History of Chiropractic (AHC). During his nearly 60-year career, Dr. Sportelli has embodied the spirit of the award, given to “living individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the chiropractic profession.”
Presently there is no consensus on the best treatment for Achilles tendon rupture; and its management is still controversial. The treatment options are conservative treatment and surgical repair. With either treatment, be it conservative or surgical, Achilles tendon tears necessitate prolonged recovery and rehabilitative management.
