Upgrades at National Completed
National University of Health Sciences has completed upgrades to the Training and Assessment Centers at its Illinois and Florida campuses. The upgrades will provide full digital capability at both centers. An NUHS press release announcing the upgrades provides insight into the purpose of the Training and Assessment Centers and the importance of going digital:
"The TAC provides special assessment/treatment rooms where students are recorded and evaluated as they encounter standardized patients or other simulated clinical challenges. ... Recording to a digital file allows the student-patient interaction to be saved, copied and reviewed easily by the student and several instructors, or replayed for discussion via computer projection in the classroom. Faculty can now more easily monitor student performance from the control room during classes or examinations. Also, they can view the TAC encounters from their own offices either in real-time or as digital recordings. The recordings can be copied to USB flash drives in just a few minutes so that students can review the digital images from their own computers for self-evaluation."
Lifetime Achievement Award for Dr. David Butters
Seattle chiropractor Dr. David Butters has received the first lifetime achievement award from the Washington State Chiropractic Association. Chair of the Washington Chiropractic Trust – the profession's political action committee in Washington – and chair of the WSCA Government Relations Committee, Dr. Butters is past chair of both the Chiropractic Disciplinary Board and the Chiropractic Quality Assurance Commission (which the board became following restructuring). For each organization, he served a five-year, governor-appointed term.
"I am honored to receive this recognition," he said. "There are many who continue to work hard on behalf of the chiropractic profession and the patients we serve. Participating in the organizational activities and affairs of chiropractic provides an opportunity to give back to the profession that has blessed me and my family with so much."
ABCA Diplomate Exam Reminder
The American Board of Chiropractic Acupuncture diplomate exam will be held Sept. 23 at NUHS during the Council of Chiropractic Acupuncture Symposium. Lecturers scheduled to present at the event, which also features guest speakers Dr. Daryl Wills (past ACA president) and Dr. Anthony Hamm (newly elected co-chair of the AMA Health Care Professional Advisory Committee Review Board) include Drs. Dr. Louis Sportelli received the Lee-Homewood Chiropractic Heritage Award during the annual conference of the Association for the History of Chiropractic (AHC). During his nearly 60-year career, Dr. Sportelli has embodied the spirit of the award, given to “living individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the chiropractic profession.”
Presently there is no consensus on the best treatment for Achilles tendon rupture; and its management is still controversial. The treatment options are conservative treatment and surgical repair. With either treatment, be it conservative or surgical, Achilles tendon tears necessitate prolonged recovery and rehabilitative management.
