Sherman College honored nine chiropractors and other professionals during its annual Lyceum, a homecoming and educational program attended by chiropractors throughout the U.S. and internationally. The college is proud to announce the following 2010 award recipients:
Chiropractor of the Year: Dr. James W. Dubel
Dr. James Dubel of Middletown/Red Bank, NJ, was named Chiropractor of the Year, an honor bestowed upon a chiropractor who has, through his or her service, given extraordinary time and effort to advance Sherman College and the chiropractic profession.
Dr. Dubel is founder and has served as coordinator of New Beginning for a New Future, a chiropractic philosophy program, since 1990. In addition, Dr. Dubel has guest lectured at several chiropractic colleges, including Sherman, and is a certified chiropractic continuing education speaker who has held the platform at various national, state and local chiropractic organizations. He has served the profession in this capacity in addition to being director of Health in Hand Chiropractic Center in Middletown/Red Bank since 1980, when he graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, IA. He holds a bachelor's degree in biology and education from Monmouth College.
Dr. Dubel is a member of the Sherman College Board of Regents, a group of individuals dedicated to supporting quality chiropractic education. He is also a member of the International Chiropractic Association, Council of New Jersey Chiropractic, Garden State Chiropractic Society and the Federation of Straight Chiropractors and Organizations. He is president of the board of New Beginnings and president of the "Cruisin' with the Oldies" charity event. He and his wife, Barbara, live in Shrewsbury and have three children: Palmer James, Stephanie Victoria, and Hunter Evan.
Regent of the Year: Dr. John Hilpisch
Dr. John Hilpisch was named Regent of the Year for the second year in a row in recognition of his efforts to raise money for the college by growing the Board of Regents.
Sherman College's Regent of the Year designation is an honor bestowed upon a member of the Board of Regents for his or her outstanding and continuous advancement of Sherman College through participation on the Board of Regents. This board is comprised of individuals dedicated to supporting quality chiropractic education through their financial donations.
Dr. Hilpisch serves as chairman of Sherman's Board of Trustees. He is active in fundraising for the college and referred four new regents to Sherman last year and one so far this year. Vice President for Institutional Advancement Susan Newlin said, "Dr. Hilpisch is a go-getter in every sense of the word. He is always speaking highly of Sherman and why the college is so deserving of support. His enthusiasm for Sherman College is absolutely contagious and an inspiration for me."
Hilpisch is a 1987 graduate of Northwestern College of Chiropractic. He owns and operates Hilpisch Upper Cervical Chiropractic, Inc., in Lake Elmo, Minnesota. He holds membership in the Foundation for the Advancement of Chiropractic Education, the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association and the William G. Blair Chiropractic Society, where he serves as president. The Blair Society named him Chiropractor of the Year in 2005.

When I graduated from chiropractic college in 1981 and started practice, I heard it all, and very little was positive. “You are a quack; you do not know what a subluxation is; you couldn’t get into a real health care program, so you chose the one that is slightly above a mail-order degree; you have no proof that chiropractic works; Are you really licensed?”, and so much more.

A central challenge in creating our identity is that chiropractic is a method of care, not a technique or procedure. This is an important concept for us to promote. Our patients are treated with lifestyle modification, exercise, nutritional supplements, diet and a whole-body approach to accelerate the natural healing process. We are not simply CMT providers.
The results of a global survey released late last year (2023) unveiled some startling findings among medical and nursing students. The “Clinician of the Future: 2023 Education Edition” surveyed 2,212 students, of which 446 were in the United States, from 91 countries.
