The Fédération Internationale de Chiropratique du Sport (FICS), the international organization representing the specialty of sports chiropractic, has great pleasure in announcing the appointment of Dr. Philip Santiago of Lake Hiawatha, N.J., as acting secretary-general.
"Dr. Santiago brings outstanding credentials, ability and experience to FICS and this position," said FICS President Dr. Roland Noirat. "[He] will be responsible for overall day-to-day management of our rapidly expanding organization."
Dr. Santiago is a 1978 graduate of New York Chiropractic College and since 1981 has been chairman of NYCC's Department of Sports Medicine. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Sports Physicians and a founder of its Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician (CCSP) program.
Since 1979, he has been in private practice in Lake Hiawatha, were he has developed a nationally recognized sports chiropractic practice. Dr. Santiago has served as medical director for teams and games events in many sports including football, rugby, boxing, gymnastics and athletics. In 1992, he served as team chiropractor for the U.S. Olympic Team at the Barcelona Olympic Games, and since 2001 he has been a member of the USOC Sports Medicine Advisory Committee.
Dr. Santiago has served in many volunteer and senior administrative positions in the profession, including president of the American Board of Chiropractic Sports Physicians (1986-1990. Among his many other honors received are Chiropractor of the Year from the New Jersey Chiropractic Society (1990) and the American Chiropractic Association Sports Council (1993), and induction into the ACA Sports Medicine Hall of Fame in 2005.
FICS is headquartered at the House of Sport, Lausanne, Switzerland, which is the home of the Olympic Movement, but its administrative offices and staff are in Toronto at the offices of the World Federation of Chiropractic. Dr. Santiago will continue to live and practice in New Jersey, overseeing FICS' staff and operations from there.

When I graduated from chiropractic college in 1981 and started practice, I heard it all, and very little was positive. “You are a quack; you do not know what a subluxation is; you couldn’t get into a real health care program, so you chose the one that is slightly above a mail-order degree; you have no proof that chiropractic works; Are you really licensed?”, and so much more.

A central challenge in creating our identity is that chiropractic is a method of care, not a technique or procedure. This is an important concept for us to promote. The results of a global survey released late last year (2023) unveiled some startling findings among medical and nursing students. The “Clinician of the Future: 2023 Education Edition” surveyed 2,212 students, of which 446 were in the United States, from 91 countries.
