Dr. E. Maylon Drake, former president of the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic (LACC) at Southern California University of Health Sciences (SCU), passed away in Knoxville, Tenn., on Monday, Jan. 18, 2010. He was 89 years old.
Dr. Drake was born in Nampa, Idaho in 1920. He dedicated his life to serving others through his vast knowledge and experience in education and educational administration. He received his bachelor's, master's, and doctorate in education from USC and served a number of school districts in the Southern California area as their chief executive officer. He returned to USC in 1978 as Director of the Academy for Educational Management and as Professor of Educational Administration.
In February of 1980, Dr. Drake became president of LACC, which was located in Glendale, Calif., at that time. One of his first responsibilities was to help the college in its quest for a new campus. Through his various contacts in the field of education, Dr. Drake was instrumental in helping the college relocate to the former Lowell High School campus in Whittier, Calif., where added growth and educational enhancements were possible.
During his tenure as president, Dr. Drake brought many outstanding educators to LACC in crucial roles that placed the college in the forefront of chiropractic education. He also served on the Council of Chiropractic Education (CCE), providing educational leadership in the role of vice president and then president. Later, he also served CCE as a public member.
Following his retirement from the presidency in February 1990, Dr. Drake continued to serve LACC in the position of chancellor. In 1995 he became a member of the LACC Board of Regents and later was honored with the designation of chancellor emeritus.
Dr. John Scaringe, interim president at SCU, commented on Dr. Drake's passing: "The passing of one of the university's great leaders comes with great sadness. Dr. Drake was widely respected for all his contributions in education and accreditation. His loss will be felt throughout the university for years to come."
Dr. Drake was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Lois Drake. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Christopher and Paulette Drake of Midlothian, Va., and Cameron and Rachel Drake of Knoxville, Tenn., as well as grandchildren Jennifer Drake, Jason Drake, Austin Drake and Dylan Drake.

The results of a global survey released late last year (2023) unveiled some startling findings among medical and nursing students. The “Clinician of the Future: 2023 Education Edition” surveyed 2,212 students, of which 446 were in the United States, from 91 countries.
