Because they have yet to pass national legislation protecting the chiropractic profession, Japanese DCs are in a similar situation that U.S. DCs faced. We were fortunate enough to be able to pass chiropractic licensure state by state. The DCs in Japan must accomplish this nationally, which has proved to be an extremely difficult task. And in spite of their efforts, Japanese DCs are currently faced with two chiropractic professions.
NHSU Alumni Establish New Scholarship Award
Alumni at Northwestern Health Sciences University (NHSU) understand how tough it can be to pay for a graduate education. Recently, three graduates of Northwestern's chiropractic college - Cody Hoefert, DC ('04), Michael Smith, DC ('06) and Jason Sherman, DC ('99) - joined together to create the Student Leadership Award scholarship to recognize individuals whose involvement and leadership has made a significant impact at Northwestern.
"We created this scholarship as a way to give back to an institution that has given each of us so much," says Dr. Hoefert. "Without the education we received at Northwestern, we would not be able to practice and have the lives that we have."
The group came together to create this opportunity because they want all future graduates to be successful, thereby making the profession more successful, according to Dr. Smith. "With this scholarship, I hope it helps ease the financial burden placed on our future graduates. If their debt can be lower when they start to practice, they have a chance to become more successful and financially stable, thus giving them the opportunity to donate and help others as well," he says.
This year, the first-ever Student Leadership Award scholarship was presented to Linda Hanson, a chiropractic student, who was honored for her accomplishments as president of the student senate.
