A Vacation Dream

Editorial Staff

The waves bubbled and lapped at my ankles as I squinted out over the water. The sun was suspended low in the sky as the day gave way to early dusk. Behind me, the soft rhythm of the bongos began. Absently, I plucked a flower from my lei and tucked the fragrant blossom behind one ear. A gentle breeze stirred, and my grass skirt whispered in answer. And then, as expected, long canoes pulled into sight as they rounded the point of the protective arm of the cove. The men dipped their oars and deftly maneuvered the craft through the breakers. Behind me the coal-laced pits were already prepared for the evening's luau. I turned away from the water, as a voice called my name.....

Startled out of my day-dream reverie, I glanced at my watch with a twinge of guilt. I was supposed to meet my family in the lobby of the Sheraton Makaha Resort and Country Club 20 minutes ago. We had come here to Oahu for MPI's Advanced Seminar and were having a wonderful time. The ridiculously scenic beauty of the beach almost made me forget who or where I was. More than one visitor to this beautiful island resort has been known to swoon over the breathtaking views of the panoramic beauty of Makaha. It's completely understandable and entirely acceptable in Oahu country.

Oahu offers everything from the idyllic to the swank, depending on your craving. But whether you're a first-time visitor or a nostalgic return-vacationer, there is always something new and exciting to see and do on this incredible tropical oasis.

A tempting rainbow of sights and activities awaits. For the nature-lover, there is the famous Dole Pineapple Cannery. There are several 35-minute tours through-out the day that you won't want to miss. Where is it? Just 10 to 15 minutes outside of Waikiki. Just look for the giant pineapple in the sky!

If you've wisely rented a car, another recreational area for the nature lover is Kahaluu and Chinaman's Hat, a small offshore island that resembles the shape of a plantations worker's cap. Kahaluu's adjacent fish ponds were the location of the "Karate Kid II." This tiny town fronts the center of Kanoehe Bay, an eight-mile recreational area that is protected by a barrier reef.

Then there are the Waiahole and Waikane valleys, which are home to most of Oahu's sweet potato crop. The area also offers papayas, bananas, pineapples, and coconuts at numerous roadside stands.

A drive up to Koko Head and Koko Crater drops you by Hanauma Bay for great snorkeling at this marine preserve. This area is also part of Oahu's last volcanic activity.

A tour of the rugged southern coast affords visitors views of Molokai and Lanai. A stop at the roadside terrace for a look at Holona Blowhoe where a geyser blasts up through a hole in the ceiling of a submerged lava tube when wave conditions are right.

For those who seek the excitement of great entertainment and night-life, the island of Oahu is alive with shows and spectacles primed for fun. Classy resorts cater with linen and silver to the sophisticated, while theaters and revues blaze with color and spectacle. The choice is yours. The beauty of it is, whether you seek to beat urban stress and take to the beaches or long for glitz and high-tech dance clubs, Oahu offers it all.
