Dynamic Chiropractic's 1990 Men and Women of the Year:

As the chiropractic profession prepares to embark on its second century, there is one area within the profession that has already demonstrated its ability to help establish our future: chiropractic research. The efforts of extremely selfless women and men, both DCs and non-DCs have already made a profound affect on how this profession is perceived and accepted.

From the halls of chiropractic colleges around the world, to the courtrooms in every nation, to the boardrooms of insurance companies and finally to the minds of the public, chiropractic research has made a very important, if not critical difference. The New Zealand Report, the Canadian study; Chiropractors - Do They Help?, the Meade et al study (which appeared in the British Medical Journal), the Cherkin and MacCornack study (which appeared in the Western Journal of Medicine) and many, many other studies that have been published both in the chiropractic literature and other scientific journals have left their mark for our profession.

Sometimes these researchers were able to defend the profession directly as in Oregon and West Virginia. Other times their efforts broke new ground in establishing respect and communication for chiropractic with other scientific disciplines as in chiropractic's inclusion in the First World Congress on Biomechanics. But most of the time, the diligence of these extremely dedicated men and women has gone unnoticed.

No one saw the insurance payments that were not withheld due to their research. Most of us would never know what might have happened in the state and national legislatures if not for the product of their work. Most know the benefits of being part of the workers' compensation system, but few realize the part that research has played in that privilege.

The is no question that without the efforts of these hardworking individuals, the chiropractic profession would be much more restricted if not headed for extinction. Their efforts are the key to our growth and prosperity.

For these and many other reasons, Dynamic Chiropractic would like to honor them now. We have attempted to print the names of everyone involved in research for the chiropractic profession. Naturally, we have probably missed a number of individuals who are involved in important work. European chiropractors are particularly involved in research and will probably be more subject to unintentional absence. For any and all omissions, we sincerely apologize in advance.

Chiropractic Research Journal Editors

There is more to research than the hard work of gathering and analyzing data. A research project is completed when it is published. That is when the research becomes part of the scientific literature and available for assimilation by the chiropractic practitioner.

Special Recognition: Non-chiropractic Researchers

There are at least three very important studies that have been conducted by "non-chiropractors" who are not associated with the chiropractic profession. Two of these studies appeared in medical, not chiropractic research publications. These studies have in some ways have had a very profound influence because they were not studies by the chiropractic research community.

For their efforts in research that have and continue to benefit the chiropractic profession worldwide, we would like to honor:

Daniel C. Cherkin, Ph.D. and Frederick A. MacCornak, Ph.D. for their study titled: "Patient Evaluations of Low Back Pain Care From Family Physicians and Chiropractors." This study demonstrated that "Patients of chiropractors were three times as likely as patients of family physicians to report that they were very satisfied with the care they received for low back pain (66% versus 22% respectively)." This study was published in The Western Journal of Medicine in the March 1989 issue.

Thomas W. Meade, F.R.C.P. et al for the study titled, "Low Back Pain of Mechanical Origin: Randomised Comparison of Chiropractic and Hospital Outpatient Treatment." This study concluded that "...chiropractic almost certainly confers worthwhile, long-term benefit in comparison with hospital outpatient management." In addition, the paper recommended that, "Introducing chiropractic into NHS (National Health Service) should be considered." This paper was very important, in that, it showed chiropractic care to be more effective and ultimately more cost effective. This study was published in the June 2, 1990 issue of the British Medical Journal.

A. Patel-Christopher very recently conducted a study titled, "Family Physicians and Chiropractors: A Need for Better Communication and Cooperation." The study involved surveys of both DCs and MDs referral habits and why (or why not). This study will ultimately assist in encouraging cross-referral and help the chiropractic profession better understand what misconceptions still exist. This study was conducted as a thesis at the University of Toronto. It has not yet been published. More information is contained in the November 1990 issue of The Chiropractic Report.
