When sports chiropractors first appeared at the Olympic Games in the 1980s, it was alongside individual athletes who had experienced the benefits of chiropractic care in their training and recovery processes at home. Fast forward to Paris 2024, where chiropractic care was available in the polyclinic for all athletes, and the attitude has now evolved to recognize that “every athlete deserves access to sports chiropractic."
CCR Meeting at NWCC
Approximately 40 people from various colleges and chiropractic organizations attended the Consortium for Chiropractic Research (CCR) meeting held September 13-15, 1991 at Northwestern College of Chiropractic (NWCC) in Bloomington, Minnesota.
Several times a year, delegates from the member colleges and associations meet for two days of intensive discussions. Representatives from CCE member colleges included Cleveland Chiropractic College of Los Angeles (CCCLA), Life College of Chiropractic West, Los Angeles College of Chiropractic (LACC), Western States Chiropractic College, Palmer College of Chiropractic, NWCC, Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC), and National College of Chiropractic (NCC). Members from organizations belonging to the CCR included the California Chiropractic Association (CCA), National Institute of Chiropractic Research (NICR), Gonstead Clinical Studies Society, and the International Chiropractic Association of California (ICAC).
The research advisory council of the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research (FCER) also met following the CCR meeting. The committee, made up of various colleges' research directors, met with Steve Wolk, Ph.D., deputy director of the FCER.
FSCO Holds Annual Meeting
In September, the Federation of Straight Chiropractic Organizations (FSCO) held its annual meeting in Philadelphia. Attending were board members, general members, and interested student members. The meeting addressed a variety of topics including equipment grants by the FSCO to SCASA-accredited colleges, how FSCO members could obtain liability, malpractice insurance, and FSCO's goals.
New FSCO and officers and board members were elected at the meeting. The newly elected officers for 1991-1992 are Dr. Joseph Sasso, president; Dr. Cindy Pekofsky, first vice president; Dr. James Healey, second vice president; Dr. Brian McAulay, secretary; and Dr. Herb Schraw, treasurer. The elected board members are Dr. Anthony DeMarco; Dr. Harold Gable; Dr. David Koch; Dr. Ronald Lanzara; Dr. Douglas Gates; Dr. Joseph Strauss; and Dr. Gregory Fox.
NYCC Dedicates New Campus
The New York Chiropractic College (NYCC) dedicated its new Seneca Falls campus in the Finger Lakes region of New York, September 13-15. Over a thousand people attended the dedication celebration.
Featured speakers included Congressman Frank Horton, and NYCC President Kenneth W. Padgett.
Cleveland Colleges Unite to Form Multi-Campus System
The Cleveland Chiropractic Colleges located in Los Angeles and Kansas City have announced their restructuring into a multi-campus system. In this new system, the governing and specific administrative functions of the two colleges will be unified, while each college maintains its individual identity operating as an independent campus with academic and instructional autonomy. The colleges' boards of trustees will unite into a single, larger board that will assume responsibilities for both colleges.
During the transition period (beginning immediately and ending in February 1992) Dr. Carl S. Cleveland III, president of the Kansas City campus will assume the position of president-elect of the multi-campus system. Dr. Carl S. Cleveland, Jr., president of the Los Angeles campus, will become chancellor of the multi-campus system in February 1992. Dr. James C. Anderson, Kansas City trustee and Mr. Arnold Arch, Los Angeles trustee, will serve as co-chairmen for the united board.
Palmer (Davenport) Works with Blackhawk Epilepsy Association
In September, Dr. John Mosby, coordinator of the special care unit at the Palmer Clinic in Davenport, Iowa spoke to the Blackhawk Epilepsy Association in Moline, Illinois on how chiropractic can help epilepsy sufferers. The Blackhawk Epilepsy Association is a chapter of the Epilepsy Foundation of America, and helps its clients make contact with various health care services.
Dr. Mosby co-authored a study of how chiropractic adjustments helped in the case of a five-year-old girl suffering from epilepsy.
New Executive Vice President at CCCLA
Matthew M. Givrad, Ph.D., was recently appointed to the position of executive vice president at Cleveland College of Chiropractic Los Angeles (CCCLA). He is an elected member of the CCE's Commission on Accreditation and currently serves as its chairman. Dr. Givrad is also a member of the CCE board of directors and its Executive Committee, chairs the CCE Audit Panel, and is a member of its Planning Panel. It was this lengthy history of service to chiropractic education that made Dr. Givrad the prime candidate for the position of CCCLA executive vice president.
Director of Admissions Appointed at Palmer
Ms. Alana Ferguson was appointed to the position of director of admissions at Palmer (Davenport) on October 14, 1991. She served as the interim director of admissions from April 1991 until her recent appointment, and was formerly the assistant to the dean of Graduate Studies and Research. She holds the title of associate professor.
With an M.S. in library science from the University of Illinois and a B.S. in Education from Ohio State University, Ms. Ferguson first came to Palmer in 1982 as an instructor in the David D. Palmer Health Sciences Library.
