Hong Kong DC Aquitted of Fraud

Editorial Staff

South China Court Magistrate John Saunders found DC Lu Chak-keung not guilty of willfully and falsely using the title of doctor. The case involved an undercover police officer, acting as a patient, who obtained a sick leave certificate from Dr. Lu on which the words "doctor of chiropractic" and "medical practitioner" were written. The prosecuting attorney reported that the police had acted on a complaint through the Medical Council. Dr. Lu submitted that the title "doctor" could also be used for doctors of law and philosophy. He testified that he was a doctor of chiropractic, fully trained, and had not misled anyone as to his status. Dr. Lu also practices in America, spending half of every month in California.

This dispute, among others, (all of which have been acquitted) arises from the Chinese name for DCs. The Hong Kong Chiropractors Association changed the Chinese name for chiropractor to jek tsui fo yi sung (spine treatment doctors), replacing the former translation of jek tsui king fo yi sung (spine and nerve treatment doctors), which doctors claimed was easily confused with the Chinese translation for orthopedic surgeons.
