When sports chiropractors first appeared at the Olympic Games in the 1980s, it was alongside individual athletes who had experienced the benefits of chiropractic care in their training and recovery processes at home. Fast forward to Paris 2024, where chiropractic care was available in the polyclinic for all athletes, and the attitude has now evolved to recognize that “every athlete deserves access to sports chiropractic."
MCS Offers Free Care to Families of Military
The Michigan Chiropractic Society (MCS) announced that its members will supply free health care to the families of military serving in Operation Desert Storm. Dr. Kim Shunkwiler, a Vietnam veteran and organizer of the MCS effort said, "This is the least we can do for our friends and neighbors who are sacrificing so much by being in the Middle East. All of us need to rally round them and their families to show them our appreciation."

PCU (Iowa) Opens Industrial Consulting and Education Center
The Davenport, Iowa campus of Palmer Chiropractic University (PCU) recently announced the opening of its new Industrial Consulting and Education Center, developed to offer students the opportunity to care for musculoskeletal injuries that occur in industrial work settings.
The center will stress prevention and education as tools to reduce on-the-job injuries, as well as adding an exercise and rehabilitation program and a back school. These programs will train workers in proper approaches to movement and correct lifting techniques so that the healing process is not interrupted.
Other services the center will provide include: work-related injuries surveys, pre-employment/pre-placement physical screening examinations, preventative and after-injury chiropractic care, and chronic pain seminars.
State Approves Masters' Program at Life
The state of Georgia has granted approval to Life College for a new masters' degree in Sports Health Science. The new program will be the first graduate degree offered at Life College, according to Dr. Sid E. Williams, founder and president.
The academic program will emphasize courses in research, exercise physiology, and the prevention and care of exercise-induced injuries. A separate tract will concentrate on the health and wellness field and conditioning programs.
NYCC Expands and Moves Facilities
New York Chiropractic College (NYCC) will be expanding its educational facilities from Old Brookville, Long Island to Seneca Falls, New York. The main campus will be at the former Eisenhower College. The formal dedication ceremony will be on September 14, 1991.
NYCC Offers Workplace Injury Seminar Series
NYCC, in conjunction with Preventech, will offer a ten session, 120-hour certification program titled "Management of the Workplace Injury." This course is recognized by the Congress of Chiropractic Consultants, and can also be applied toward application as a diplomate of the American Board if Chiropractic Consultants (D.A.B.C.C.), which requires 300 hours of coursework.
The Management of the Workplace Injury course will be held in Old Brookville, New York at NYCC on April 13-14, and Chicago, Illinois on May 4-5. CCR Will Conduct Low Back Pain Study
The Consortium for Chiropractic Research (CCR) has approved preliminary funding for a collaborative low-back study which will incorporate research data contributed from the clinics of three CCR-member chiropractic colleges: Palmer Chiropractic University (Sunnyvale), Northwestern College of Chiropractic, and Los Angeles College of Chiropractic.
The study is titled "Three Site Outcomes Assessment and Data Pooling Demonstration Project: Focus on Low Back Pain." The objective is to demonstrate the feasibility of implementing patient-oriented outcome measures, and assessing the effectiveness of chiropractic care, in a college clinic environment.
Chiropractic Centennial Foundation Meets
The Chiropractic Centennial Foundation recently held elections of trustees and officers, and announced that Flair Communications Agency, Inc. of Chicago will be its official marketing firm. Flair will assist in planning the celebration of chiropractic's 100th anniversary in 1995. The agency's clients include the American Dairy Association, Commonwealth Edison, and General Foods. Flair plans to promote the chiropractic profession as the primary form of health care for Americans, as well as focus on patient education and student recruitment.
The Foundation is seeking to have a commemorative postage stamp made for chiropractic's centennial. The next meeting will be held April 4, 1991 at the Davenport, Iowa campus of Palmer Chiropractic University.
Kansas Legislators Visit NCC
Representatives from the Kansas Chiropractic Association brought 50 Kansas legislators, including senators John Strick and Don Sallee to NCC, giving the legislators an opportunity to develop a better understanding of the chiropractic educational process. An NCC entourage including Dr. James F. Winterstein, president, and Dr. Jacob Fisher, chancellor, discussed NCC and led tours of the facilities.
