Because they have yet to pass national legislation protecting the chiropractic profession, Japanese DCs are in a similar situation that U.S. DCs faced. We were fortunate enough to be able to pass chiropractic licensure state by state. The DCs in Japan must accomplish this nationally, which has proved to be an extremely difficult task. And in spite of their efforts, Japanese DCs are currently faced with two chiropractic professions.
Electronic Chiropractic Communication Network Established
A computer-linked communication network for the chiropractic profession has been implemented. The General Electric Network for Information Exchange (GENIE) is providing chiropractic an area on their system, which is currently accessible throughout the United States and Canada, as well as Japan, West Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
This network is a breakthrough for chiropractic, as it allows instantaneous communication among the users on a world-wide basis.
The system will also be used to store and retrieve information relevant to a DC's everyday practice; to obtain college and research news; and to conduct meetings and seminars without leaving home (see the December 5th 1990 issue of "DC", A Chiropractic Round Table).
You can subscribe to the system for $4.95 per month (slightly higher outside the United States). This charge covers most of the basic services you will use.
For further information and to subscribe to GENIE:
Set your computer communications program to:
8 data bits
No parity
1 stop bit
Half duplex (local echo on)
Allowable baud rates are 2400, 1200, and 300.
Dial the GENIE computer at 1-800-638-8369. Upon connection, type "HHH" (no quotes) followed by a . GENIE will respond with "U#=". At this point, enter "XTX99694,GENIE". You will then be given information about the system, rates, etc., after which you will have the opportunity to join.
After you are given access to the system, (usually takes two days), send me a note via GENIE's electronic mail to my address:
B.SUTTON1
I will send you instructions and authorization to enter the chiropractic section.
If you own a computer, this system is for you. If you do not yet have a computer, now is the time to get one.
