When sports chiropractors first appeared at the Olympic Games in the 1980s, it was alongside individual athletes who had experienced the benefits of chiropractic care in their training and recovery processes at home. Fast forward to Paris 2024, where chiropractic care was available in the polyclinic for all athletes, and the attitude has now evolved to recognize that “every athlete deserves access to sports chiropractic."
New York HMO Includes Chiropractic in Coverage
After a presentation to a group of New York primary care physicians by the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), the New York-based Mid-Hudson Health plan HMO announced it would include chiropractic in its coverage.
ACA Vice President of Professional Affairs Dr. Jerome McAndrews spoke on the scientific basis for chiropractic practice at the June 2nd primary care physician meeting. Herbert Weinman, M.D., gave a talk on the musculoskeletal system and how chiropractic could be utilized by an HMO.
Dr. McAndrews said, "My remarks covered everything from a brief history of chiropractic, including references to the early years of D.D. Palmer and how eventually the profession began to use a different lexicon in order to avoid being classified as practitioners of medicine." Dr. McAndrews also spoke on chiropractic education, commenting that chiropractic is "not an occupation requiring minimal attention, but rather a professional education emersed in the dynamics of the musculoskeletal system and other aspects of health."
