When sports chiropractors first appeared at the Olympic Games in the 1980s, it was alongside individual athletes who had experienced the benefits of chiropractic care in their training and recovery processes at home. Fast forward to Paris 2024, where chiropractic care was available in the polyclinic for all athletes, and the attitude has now evolved to recognize that “every athlete deserves access to sports chiropractic."

U.S. Representative John Lewis Speaks at Life
U.S. Representative John Lewis (D-Georgia), a prominent civil rights leader since the 1960s, spoke to a standing-room only crowd at Life College April 6.
A member of the House Ways and Means Committee, Rep. Lewis also serves as chief deputy majority whip of the House and is representing Georgia's Fifth Congressional District in his fourth term. Rep. Lewis assured the students that he would advise President Clinton, the first lady, the vice president, and the subcommittee on health about the importance of chiropractic care. "I'm going to do what I can as a member of the leadership of the House to see that your profession is included in the new health bill," he said.
Recognized in 1963 as one of the "Big Six" leaders of the civil rights movement that included Martin Luther King Jr., Whitney Young, James Farmer, A. Phillip Randolph, and Roy Wilkins, Rep. Lewis has followed Dr. King's example of civil rights via nonviolent methods. He has braved 40 arrests, numerous physical attacks, and serious injuries.
Life President Dr. Sid Williams invited Rep. Lewis to return to the college and speak again, saying, "I have long been an admirer of Congressman Lewis for his courage, perseverance, and political acumen."
Florida Chiro. Association Awards Chiro of the Year
Dr. David Boschowitz of Lauderhill, Florida, was named the Florida Chiropractic Association's Chiropractor of the Year. A past FCA president and chairman of the workers' compensation advisory committee, he is also chairman of the peer review consultants of the division of Workers' Compensation Bureau of Medical Services.
Dr. Boschowitz has been in private practice in Florida since 1974, specializing in chiropractic orthopedics. He also assists practitioners on a consultant basis, as well as insurance companies, attorneys, and the court system. Dr. Boschowitz is the first chiropractic physician appointed to the 17th Judicial Circuit Court as a court-appointed physician in the state of Florida, and has been serving in that capacity since 1979.
To Russia with Chiro
Michael Kale, DC, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, lead a chiropractic delegation to Russia March 14-24. The DCs went to demonstrate chiropractic to Russian MDs.
South Carolina Chiro. Association Awards Scholarship
Christopher B. McCracken, a native of Lexington, South Carolina and second quarter student at Life Chiropractic College, was awarded the 1993 Dr. K.R. Jones Memorial Scholarship from the South Carolina Chiropractic Association (SCCA). SCCA President, Dr. H.W. Hulteen presented the $1500 scholarship to Mr. McCracken during opening ceremonies of the 3rd Annual K.R. Jones Philosophy Forum.
Mr. McCracken, a member of the Gonstead Club, thanked the scholarship committee for the honor, and assured the audience that the scholarship was both appreciated and needed.
The K.R. Jones Memorial Scholarship was first established in 1991 by the SCCA in remembrance of Dr. Ken Jones, who served as the association's president from June 1989 to June 1990. Dr. Jones succumbed to cancer in August of 1990. The scholarship is an annual award funded through donations and proceeds from the annual K.R. Philosophy Forum, which was first established by Dr. Jones and now administered by the SCCA.
Applications for the scholarship can be obtained from the South Carolina Chiropractic Association office or from the financial aid office at one of the colleges. The deadline for the 1994 scholarship is November 1, 1993.

GCA Legislative UpdateThe Georgia Chiropractic Association has worked to introduce legislation that will strengthen the role of DCs as primary health care providers.
- Senate Bill 61 clarifies the right of the DC to use hot and cold packs, and structural supports. Certain automobile insurance carriers have claimed that such devices are outside the scope of practice.
- House Bill 196 adds the verbiage "examine, diagnose and treat" to the Scope of Practice Act to better reflect what DCs do in practice.
- House Bill 247 provides that diagnostic laboratories may accept or reject referrals from DCs. Access to laboratory testing is not clearly defined for chiropractors at this time.
GCA Commits Funds to Georgia Special Olympics
The Georgia Chiropractic Association has pledged more than $50,000 to sponsor the recruitment efforts and registration costs for the Georgia Special Olympics. The Georgia Special Olympics is an annual sports training and competition program of 18 different sports for children and adults with mental handicaps.

GCC Sponsors Philosophy NightThe Georgia Council of Chiropractic (GCC), an innate-based group, sponsored a philosophy night April 10. Drs. Medhat Alattar, Eddy Cohen, Dawn VonRuden, and Larry Webster shared their experiences from their recent trip to Haiti with Dr. Jim Sigafoose. (Dr. Sigafosse's article on that trip will appear in the 7-12 issue of DC). While in Haiti, residents of that country were told the story of chiropractic via interpreter. Many Haitians lined up for treatment to receive receiving their first specific chiropractic adjustment.
Life College Class of '93 Gives to Homeless Shelter
The Life College class of 1993 has donated a $1000 to the Ministries United for Service and Training (MUST). The donation will be used for items needed by their overnight shelter, the Elizabeth Inn, in Marietta, Georgia.
"We are very grateful for the generosity and support of the 1993 Class. This gift enables MUST to give help and hope to many who are in need," said Colleen Haman, a MUST administrative assistant.
Life Basketball Coach Wins Division III/NAIA Coach of the Year
After leading the Life College Running Eagles men's basketball team to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national tournament, Roger Kaiser was named Coach of the Year for the NCAA Division III/NAIA.
Mr. Kaiser, who returned to the NAIA national tournament for the first time since 1974 when he won the title at West Georgia College, guided Life to its first national berth this year in only the second season of the program's existence. Life beat Benedict College in the first round of the tournament but lost to David Lipscomb College in the second round.
