Recent Grads Return to Romanian Clinic
LCCW June graduates Aine Sweeney, DC, and Michael Granat, DC, who spent nearly two months in Romania last fall as part of the Romanian clinicship program sponsored by the ICA, returned to that country in mid-July with LCCW student Wade Brackenbury. The trio traveled to the Camin de Handicopati, a residential facility for handicapped orphans in Negru Voda.
The six-week clinicship program gives chiropractic students the opportunity to broaden their clinical experience while helping the 250 children at the orphanage, many of whom have serious disabilities.
Palmer-West student and athlete Sharon Svensson, a two-time "ironman" triathlon winner, has been invited to speak to an audience of some 500 high school and college coaches at the 13th annual US All Star Track and Field and Cross Country Clinic, December 15-16 in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Sharon will speak on: "Chiropractic: Its Role in Enhancing Performance and Preventing Injuries," and "The Benefit of Stretching, Massage and Mental Training."
Ms. Svensson is the author of The Total Runner's Almanac, which has sold more than 5,000 copies and is now in its second printing.
Palmer West's chapter of the Student American Chiropractic Association (SACA) was honored as "Most Improved Chapter" at the recent ACA convention in Nashville, Tennessee. Current Palmer West SACA President Virginia DelCanizo, who attended the convention with SACA Vice President Charles Sperbeck, accepted the award, which recognized the 1993-94 officers: Gil Cromshaw, president; Paul Anastasio, vice president; Ms. DelCanizo, treasurer; and James "Bo" Tucker, legislative representative. Both Mr. Cromshaw and Mr. Anastasio graduated this past March.
Michael Hubka, DC, of the clinical science residency program at LACC, has been accepted as a fellow of the College of Chiropractic Sciences of Canada, making him the first American to receive this honor. To qualify, Dr. Hubka had to complete the clinical science residency requirements and pass a rigorous oral examination in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The first two parts of the exam test knowledge of manipulation, x-ray interpretation, research methods, diagnosis, and management. In the final portion of the exam, candidates must present and defend their original research project. Dr. Hubka presented "Interexaminer Reliability of Palpation for Cervical Spine Tenderness," which was co-authored by Shawn Phelan, DC.
LACC's postgraduate division offers the clinical science residency program, which includes six months of training with Dr. J. David Cassidy at the Royal University Hospital, University of Saskatchewan. Once the program is completed, the resident is eligible to sit for the fellowship examination.
Seven chiropractors sat for the exam, five from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, one from the Anglo-European College, and Dr. Hubka from LACC. Some well-known fellows of the College of Chiropractic Sciences include Drs. David Cassidy, Scott Haldeman, Dale Mierau, and Howard Vernon.
Summer '94 commencement for Cleveland Chiropractic College of Los Angeles (CCCLA) was held August 6th. The graduation speaker was Dr. James C. Anderson, chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Cleveland Colleges and a 1966 graduate of the Kansas City campus. The class valedictorian was Jeanette Reiko Steputis-Ryan, of Santa Monica.
President Carl S. Cleveland III hosted a luncheon and visual history program for the graduates and their guest on July 26 at the Delancey Street Foundation in Los Angeles.
CCCLA student Tyra Douglas was the summer 1994 recipient of the Dr. Charles Gibson Technical Skills Scholarship for scoring highest on the clinical entrance examination. Dr. Charles Gibson donates money to each accredited chiropractic college to fund a technical skills scholarship which is presented three times a year.
When sports chiropractors first appeared at the Olympic Games in the 1980s, it was alongside individual athletes who had experienced the benefits of chiropractic care in their training and recovery processes at home.
