Back pain? Blame the psoas. Seems as if everybody wants to dive headfirst into their psoas at the first sign of trouble with the lumbopelvic-hip region. Perhaps no other muscle is blamed more for causing problems than the psoas. Yes, it is an important stabilizer of the lumbar spine, but it shouldn't be the only one on which you focus. There is another big player on the scene: the iliacus.
A Moment of Silence
Chiropractic lost a leader, educator, scientist, innovator and great humanitarian on Dec. 20, 1993 with the death of Dr. Walter Pierce.
Following his graduation from Palmer in 1955, he opened the Pierce Chiropractic Clinic in Dravosburg, Pennsylvania. He became the director of We Care Chiropractic Clinic, Research and Education; president of the We Care Chiropractics Clinics Association (a nonprofit organization of over 300 members); and president of Derman Therm Inc.
An author of numerous books, manuals and patient educational materials, Dr. Pierce also investigated, experimented, researched and developed methods, techniques and equipment that will influence the profession for years to come. His work and dedication benefited millions of people.
Palmer College awarded him the D.D. Palmer Scientific award in 1969. In 1971, Columbia Institute bestowed upon him the Doctor of Humanities. He was elected a Fellow in the Palmer Academy of Chiropractic in 1988, and a Distinguished Fellow in the ICA in 1986.
Vern Pierce was always interested in results, and the greatest result of his life is that the world is a better place because he was here. The profession will miss his talents and knowledge.
To his wife of 40 years, Darlyn, son Vernon, and daughters Tami and Vicki, we extend our deepest sympathy.
