When sports chiropractors first appeared at the Olympic Games in the 1980s, it was alongside individual athletes who had experienced the benefits of chiropractic care in their training and recovery processes at home. Fast forward to Paris 2024, where chiropractic care was available in the polyclinic for all athletes, and the attitude has now evolved to recognize that “every athlete deserves access to sports chiropractic."
Endowing the Chiropractic Bicentennial
On August 8, 1997, the trustees of the Chiropractic Centennial Foundation (CCF) held their final meeting. The group, some of whom had been working together for almost a decade, met where it all began: Davenport, Iowa.
There were mixed sentiments of joy and sadness as the remaining assets of the non-profit organization were dispensed. As they remembered the challenges faced in planning chiropractic's centennial celebration, the trustees looked towards the future and asked:
"Where would chiropractic be after the next hundred years?
"How much more of a challenge would it be to celebrate chiropractic's bicentennial?
"Will their be DCs on other planets by then?"
To insure that the future chiropractic bicentennial committee won't have to begin their planning empty-handed, the CCF trustees set aside the bulk of the remaining monies in a trust. That sum is a $40,000 endowment, which will be accumulating interest for the chiropractic bicentennial until September 15, 2090. How's that for planning ahead. While $40,000 is a nice, round figure, left to grow over the next 93 years, it will become quite a substantial, holding. Depending on the interest rate, that nest egg could be worth:
Rate of Growth | Value in 2090 |
4% | $ 1,476,139 |
6% | $ 8,515,293 |
8% | $ 47,538,502 |
10% | $257,150,294 |
The CCF trustees have provided additional funding to make the chiropractic documentary "From Simple Beginnings," and the chiropractic commercials available to the chiropractic profession: both are currently available from Palmer College of Chiropractic.
The CCF's 501(c)3 non-profit corporation will not be dissolved, but will be assumed by the American Chiropractic Association and the International Chiropractors Association under the new marketing organization of our two national organizations: the Alliance for Chiropractic Progress. A donation of $10,000 from the CCF has been made to help kickoff the chiropractic marketing effort.
CCF Trustee Chairman William F. Holmberg, DC, had some final remarks on the passing of this remarkable foundation, and the tremendous amount of work that was put into it.
"Thank you. Thank you, all the advisory committee members for your efforts that made the chiropractic centennial so successful. Thank you, all the chiropractic companies, DCs and students for your tremendous support. I hope our chiropractic centennial will be a milestone in the effort to bring chiropractic care to every person on earth."
