TORONTO, Ontario -- On May 28, York University senate voted 57 to 13 to approve "in principle" the establishment of a doctor of chiropractic degree program in cooperation with the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC).
"This is a monumental step forward," enthused Jean Moss, DC, president of CMCC. "York and CMCC have been working very hard together on the affiliation proposal, and our cooperative efforts have been rewarded with approval in principle from the university's top academic body. With this vote, members of the (York) senate have provided a solid foundation for our work to continue."
Discussions related to site development, research opportunities, and potential for sharing of infrastructures and facilities will continue. The next steps include developing courses that will be offered as part of a joint program with the university, one that is in keeping with the granting of degree requirements of York University.
York University, which is in metropolitan Toronto, is the third largest university in Canada, with more than 44,000 students. It is distinguished for its excellence in teaching, scholarship and research. The association of a chiropractic degree program within the university setting is a first for Canada, and one that is seen as enhancing the public's perception of the status of chiropractic education. University affiliation will also bring greater resources and funds for chiropractic education and research (see "CMCC and York University: Embarking on an Innovative Partnership," DC, 9-8-97).
Dr. Moss thanked the people and associations in chiropractic who have supported the campaign for university affiliation. "A great deal of time, energy and resources have been put into ensuring that we reached this milestone, and I'm delighted to share with you in this success."
