Motivation is sometimes defined as the fuel that propels us toward our objectives, and it is amazing for those aiming for achievement. Understanding how to harness drive, reinforce success behaviors, and efficiently assess progress while gaining praise from colleagues and family may have a huge impact on your path to success, whether you're a professional, an entrepreneur, or someone looking to improve personally. Let’s delve into these critical characteristics and offer practical ideas to help you reach your goals.

The Exceptional Driver: Motivation

Motivation is more than a transient emotion; it is a powerful and continuous force that drives individuals to achieve their goals. Here's how to use it effectively:

1. Identify Your Core Motivators: Understanding what motivates you is vital. Core motivators might include a love of your field and or patients, a drive for personal development, or a positive influence you want to create in your clinic, around your staff and even family members.

Generally, people are not endlessly motivated. However, with clearly delineated compelling rewards, and knowing that there are rewards for doing something good, something worthwhile or something of value, will incentivize one to renew their commitment and boost their ambition. This is called “positive reinforcement”.

Identifying these motivators allows you to match your activities with what truly motivates you, resulting in a stronger feeling of purpose.

Indeed, positive reinforcement builds good habits. As a matter of fact, a major benefit of positive reinforcement is that your success is reaffirming that these habits are good and valuable and that you need to keep moving in the same direction.

Another benefit of positive reinforcement is that it creates new energy to fuel additional achievements. Meaning that it gives you the drive to keep doing more and realize greater attainment.

Just as important, you may also discover that some of those habits are in fact inhibiting your success. In other words, instead of helping you achieve greater results, your habits have been hindering your growth and therefore need to be changed or altered.

The Power of a Vision Board

Here is another suggestion to consider: a vision board. Visualizing your objectives and desires helps boost motivation. A vision board, which includes photos, phrases, and reminders of what you want to achieve, acts as a daily reminder of your goals and keeps you on track.

Be sure to place it where you will see it regularly to serve as a constant reminder of your goals. This daily exposure keeps your objectives at the forefront of your mind, enhancing your motivation to work towards them. The images, quotes, and symbols on the board also can inspire and energize you, providing a visual boost to your motivation.

Including positive affirmations and imagery associated with success and fulfillment will foster a positive mindset. This optimistic outlook can influence your behavior and decision-making in a constructive way. Seeing your goals represented visually can reinforce your belief in their attainability, helping to build self-confidence and reduce self-doubt.

Action First

In today’s society, the prevailing wisdom is to “follow your heart.” To be true to what you feel. From this perspective the main arbiter of our actions should be our emotions. However, in light of the present current economic trend, coupled with the challenges in today’s business competitive market, some things are simply too important to wait for a surge of inspiration. Sometimes action is required no matter how we may feel in the moment.

Indeed, action is paramount. Feelings and even beliefs should be secondary to how one should actually behave in our society and how one chooses to spend their time and resources. This means an individual who desires to live a life of ambition and success, must inevitably have to show up, support, and contribute to their actualization even when they don't necessarily feel like it.

But how does one ensure that their commitment is continuously ambitious and sustainable in practice? The answer is that rather than framing the matter as a one-way street from feeling to action, inspiration to initiative, motivation to ambition, our feelings should flow and follow from our actions, not just the other way around. Hence, rather than passively waiting for inspiration to strike, one can and should consciously cultivate a feeling of excitement, passion and even pleasure to the most important commitments to succeed through repeated action in practice, learning and mastery.

As an example, a writer must sometimes, irrespective of the inspiration, sit down and simply put pen to paper, fingers to the keyboard which will open the channels for inspiration to flow. As the saying goes: “if we never act our infinite potential remains untapped.”

It is interesting to note that successful entrepreneurs appreciate that inspiration and ambition don’t come easily, but rather require “actual work.” And what is work? Work is preparing, softening, and opening one's mind and heart on a daily basis in order to be fully present and receptive to the mission you set forth to succeed.

Of course, inspiration and emotions are important, but they are also fleeting. Sometimes we are motivated and feel ambitious, but often we are not. So, when we establish a regular routine, we can develop a “second nature” that enables our chosen actions to endure despite the changing weather patterns of our emotions.
