When sports chiropractors first appeared at the Olympic Games in the 1980s, it was alongside individual athletes who had experienced the benefits of chiropractic care in their training and recovery processes at home. Fast forward to Paris 2024, where chiropractic care was available in the polyclinic for all athletes, and the attitude has now evolved to recognize that “every athlete deserves access to sports chiropractic."

It’s always amazed me, the way professional doctors devote more thought and effort to planning their family vacation than planning their life. Despite everything that’s been written about the importance of goal setting, very few doctors actually put it into practice.
As a professional adult, you cannot afford to just buy a ticket, get on a train and go someplace one random morning. Although this may sound appealing and fun, it is not the goal-oriented behavior you as a doctor should consider at this time in your life.
Setting clear and compelling goals is crucial for the success and growth of any health care clinic. Whether you’re aiming to enhance patient care, improve operational efficiency, or expand services, well-defined goals provide direction and motivation for you and your team.
One of my mentors once said, “Set a goal to becoming a millionaire!” He would then explain: “Set a goal of becoming a millionaire for what it will make of you to achieve it. Set a goal that will make you reach for the stars.”
Frankly, this was one of the most valuable pieces of advice I had ever heard, and here is why: The greatest value in life is not what you obtain; the greatest value in life is what you become along the way.
Over the past 30 years as a consultant, I have developed several ideas about effective goal setting which I’d like to share with you. Here’s a simple guide on how to set, track, and implement goals effectively in your clinic.
Setting Goals
First and Foremost: Be Serious. Life is not a practice session. Make sure your goals help you become a better doctor.
Two Rules for Goal Setting: 1. Don’t set your goals too low. Make sure you go where the expectations are so strong that they motivate you, push you, and urgently insist that you not remain in the same place. 2. Don’t compromise. The goals you set should transform your life and make you far better than you are.
Identify Areas for Improvement: Start by identifying important areas in which your clinic may improve. This could include patient happiness, staff training, financial performance, or clinical outcomes. Engage your staff in brainstorming meetings to get a variety of viewpoints and ideas.
Make Goals Specific and Measurable: Goals must be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART). For example, instead of a broad aim like “improving patient care,” a SMART goal may be “increase patient satisfaction scores by 20% within six months through improved communication and reduced waiting times.”
Prioritize Goals: Not all goals must be pursued concurrently. Prioritize them based on their urgency, influence on clinic operations, and compatibility with your long-term vision. This provides targeted efforts and avoids overwhelm.
Tracking Goals
Any goal is a powerful motivator only if there’s a powerful reason behind it.
Establish Clear Measurements: Determine the measurements that will be used to track progress toward each target. Regular surveys or feedback forms may be used to assess patient satisfaction. Keep track of income, expenses, and profitability ratios to achieve your financial goals.
Regular Review and Adjustment: Schedule regular review sessions to evaluate progress and alter techniques as needed. Use these sessions to celebrate achievements, discuss obstacles, and realign goals in response to changing clinic needs or external circumstances.
Utilize Technology: Think about employing software or digital technologies to automate data collecting and reporting. This simplifies the tracking process and provides real-time insights into goal progress, allowing for prompt interventions if goals fall off course.
Implementing Results
Celebrate Achievements: Acknowledge and celebrate milestones and accomplishments with your team. Positive reinforcement promotes morale and inspires ongoing dedication to attaining goals.
Learn From Obstacles: Not every goal will be accomplished smoothly. Setbacks and challenges can be used as learning opportunities. Analyze what went wrong, alter techniques, and apply your findings to future goal-setting activities.
Integrate Goals Into Daily Operations: Incorporate goal setting into your daily routines and activities. Assign duties and develop action plans with precise tasks, dates, and accountability mechanisms for attaining objectives.
Promote a Culture of Continuous Improvement: Encourage constant reflection and input from both staff and patients. Continuously seek ways to innovate and improve clinic processes in order to better fulfill goals and satisfy changing patient demands.
Practical Takeaway
Let me finish by suggesting a key phrase of setting goals: Set the kind of goals that will make you a better person when you achieve them ... or when you are in the process of achieving them. Keep asking yourself, Honestly, what will this goal make of me? If I set this goal and move forward, how will it change me in the process?
Remember, setting compelling goals for your clinic isn’t just about aspirations; it’s about driving tangible improvements that benefit you, your team and your patients. By following these steps – setting up clear goals, tracking progress diligently, and effectively implementing results – you can create a focused and motivated clinic environment that thrives on continuous improvement and excellence in health care delivery, all done with integrity and honesty.
