Straighten Up America Helping Celebrate World Spine Day

World Spine Day provides a perfect format to energize your posture, your practice and your community. To improve your own posture and empower your patients in spinal health promotion, familiarize yourself with the Straighten Up Posture Pod exercises by clicking here or check out the www.straightenupamerica.org Web site.

World Spine Day has been created specifically for you to teach spinal health promotion to your patients and your communities. This is necessary now more than ever, as the burden of spine-related disorders is burgeoning. Costs for spine-related care totaled an estimated $193.9 billion annually in the years 2002-2004, according to data gathered by the United States Bone and Joint Decade in 2008.

To counter this disturbing trend, Straighten Up continues to gain traction and momentum in diverse contexts across the global community, with translations in 14 languages. New Straighten Up campaigns are currently being organized in Scotland, Switzerland and Malaysia.

In collaboration with Health Promotion Cluster of the World Health Organization, Straighten Up Coordinator Dr. Ron Kirk (Life University) will present the technical paper, "Focusing on Community Assets for Health Promotion: The Role of NGOs and Civil Society in Local Empowerment." Dr. Kirk's presentation anchors a sub-plenary session of the WHO's 7th Global Conference on Health Promotion in Nairobi, Kenya, Oct. 26-30 2009. His presentation will highlight Straighten Up's empowering impact on participants of the Bangalore Model Healthy City Initiative.

Life University, the Association of Chiropractic Colleges and the World Federation of Chiropractic have played importantly roles in facilitating the Bangalore Healthy City Initiative. This initiative promotes the health and well-being of the urban poor in a city of 15 million people in southern India. Dr. Kirk will also summarize the outcomes of a variety of successful NGO health promotion initiatives spanning four global regions.

At the Global Networking Conference of the Bone and Joint Decade in Washington, D.C., Oct. 22-24, 2009, Dr. Kirk will conduct a 15-minute Straighten Up ergonomic break inviting global musculoskeletal health leaders to participate in the Delphi process for the next round of Straighten Up modules. Currently, Straighten Up seed panel members are completing preliminary work on several new Straighten Up modules. Formal Delphi panel review will begin when the draft modules are completed later this year. If you are interested in participating in the next round of Delphi consensus process for Straighten Up, please contact Ron Kirk at rkirk@life.edu.
