Two New York Chiropractic College assistant professors recently earned clinical teaching privileges in the nation's veteran's hospital system. Jean-Nicolas Poirier, DC, DACBR, CCPS, and Chad Warshel, DC, DACBR, are the first chiropractic radiologists to receive credentialing by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) system to teach radiology to chiropractic students and residents enrolled in a master's of science degree in diagnostic imaging residency.
At the Canandaigua Veteran Affairs Medical Center in upstate New York, Drs. Poirier and Warshel will work with chiropractic doctors and review radiological images of their patients with NYCC interns and NYCC diagnostic imaging residents. Their appointments, which became effective in November 2009, are for two years. They plan on beginning their work at the VA within a few weeks.
At NYCC, Dr. Poirier is director of the Master of Science in Diagnostic Imaging Residency Program and Dr. Warshel is an assistant professor in the Department of Chiropractic Clinical Sciences. Both are expert chiropractic radiologists and provide imaging interpretation for practicing doctors of chiropractic through the college's clinical radiology service. This new arrangement will enhance the radiological experience of NYCC interns and residents by increasing the variety of conditions seen by the students using multiple advanced imaging modalities.
NYCC has the highest number of academic affiliations of any chiropractic college in the nation and is the first to credential chiropractic radiologists, affording students the chance to train with them at a VA facility. "It's an incredible opportunity to review diverse imaging and assist in the education of our students," Dr. Warshel said.
The Canandaigua VA Medical Center is located in the heart of the Finger Lakes region, 30 miles southeast of Rochester in Canandaigua, N.Y. Located on 150 acres, the facility maintains 14 patient care buildings. Providing inpatient and outpatient care to veterans living in upstate New York since 1933, the medical center offers numerous health care programs and services.

The results of a global survey released late last year (2023) unveiled some startling findings among medical and nursing students. The “Clinician of the Future: 2023 Education Edition” surveyed 2,212 students, of which 446 were in the United States, from 91 countries.
